1655 fuel problem

IP: 72.94.145.93 Posted on April 30, 2014 at 04:51:20 PM by Terry

Hi Larry. Thanks in advance for your advice. My 1655 diesel ran great one day and the next day it just died pulling the cultimulcher. Started up, ran a little and died again. This continued to happen so I got it back in the shed, took off the fuel bowl and fuel just dribbled out. Blew it out with air and fuel ran out fine but still wouldn't keep running. Turned out the bled screw at the glass fuel filter and got nothing. Also noticed little bubbles in the fuel filter. Replaced the fuel filter and fuel now came out the bled screw. Now it won't start at all. I was going to crack the fuel line at the pump. Should I do the high pressure or low pressure side first? Is there anything else it might be or that I should check for? I always appreciate your help.

Bleed the low pressure side first. Then, bleed the high pressure side. Larry

1958 Oliver 770 Diesel

IP: 75.171.113.155 Posted on April 28, 2014 at 08:04:40 PM by Chad

Hi Larry, my question is this. I was told that the Bosch fuel injection pumps for the 770's leaked from day one. I have a drip from around the rubber fitting where it attaches to the throttle linkage. Is it worth my time to rebuild it and have the rubber fittings and or the o rings replaced in it? Or will it just start leaking again after a little bit of time passes by? I was told that these pumps had to much pressure and as a result they always leaked. Any info would be appreciated. Oliver 77 clutch coupling spacer

I have a 1950 Oliver 77. The clutch coupling spacer (sleeve} has 2 dents in the front of it. I have a replacement one from Agco but it only has one dent. I assume that it is for anti-rotation. Will the new one work ok with only one dent? Thanks

How would I take apart the steering box on a Cockshutt 1755?

IP: 198.254.190.72 Posted on April 22, 2014 at 09:15:26 PM by Darcy

Hi Larry, I have a Cockshutt 1755 and the steering box is leaking hydraulic oil at a rapid pace. Is it a big job to take the steering box off and replace the seal?

IP: 184.21.185.185 Posted on April 23, 2014 at 07:16:35 AM by Larry Harsin

I think you should have a Shop Manual before you start. It's sort of a job to do, but you can figure it out with a Shop Manual. Larry

IP: 198.254.190.72 Posted on April 23, 2014 at 09:56:58 AM by Darcy

Is there a seal or O ring in the cylinder that is causing the leak?

Re(3): How would I take apart the steering box on a Cockshutt 1755?

IP: 172.242.134.43 Posted on May 7, 2014 at 08:05:17 AM by Larry Harsin

There is an O ring on the end and the top. And there is a quad ring that seals the sector in the gear box. The quad ring can be replaced without removing the unit from the tractor. You can get a Shop Manual from the Museum in Charles City 641-228-1099. Larry

1755 Losing Power

IP: 68.21.87.4 Posted on April 22, 2014 at 07:37:53 AM by Roy Wrightsman

Hi Larry, I have a 1755 diesel, roosa master pump. We pulled the pump off last summer because the umbrella seal was leaking. While it was off, we had it rebuilt by a local shop man with 30+ years experience. When it was done, we put it back on and rolled the new seal. Pulled back off and reinstalled. After this, we used the tractor some but it would lose power, no smoke, wouldn't die, but wouldn't hardly pull itself around. We pulled the pump back off and took it back. The shop found a small piece of lint in a port. Brought it back and reinstalled the pump. It ran fine for a while, but now it is doing the same thing again, only not as bad. the one thing I can say this time is that if you cut the throttle when this is happening and go back into it, it will usually come out of it. It doesn't happen a whole lot, maybe a couple three times in an hour of use. You can certainly tell as the smoke cuts out and it has absolutely no power. So, my question is what is the problem here? I have good fuel flow, the return is easily blown through with little resistance. Fuel is good, no other tractor issues. Like I said, the pump was taken off due to the seal failing, it ran great before this. I'm about ready to take this pump to another shop and drop a whole bunch more money into it as I am frustrated. Am I missing something? Any thoughts on the issue here would be appreciated. -Roy

I don't know what to tell you. You have a diesel shop working on it. Surely they will find it. I've had deals like that too. You just have to keep trying and you'll figure it out. Larry

I have a 1950 Oliver 77. I need to replace the clutch. I have the belt pulley housing out. Will the bell housing come right out with the engine bolted in place? It looks like I have to raise the rear of the engine so the bottom of the bell housing will clear the frame. Thanks, great resource sight!

You probably have a sticky regulator valve on your flow divider. Start your engine and run your tractor about 2/3 throttle. Wiggle your remote hydraulic levers back and forth. That should free it up. Larry

Ok, looking for some experienced expert Oliver 1850 paint advice. Going to renovate and repaint my fathers 1969 Oliver 1850. Been looking at paint options available and find lots of choices, too many. Simply put what paint do you recommend? Thanks a bunch for any help. Ernie, Texas.

I routinely use the Oliver paint from AGCO -- The meadow green and the clover white. The color is right and the price isn't too bad. Larry

Oliver 1550 gas

Friend has Oliver 1550 gas. Not able to figure what is wrong. When working under load, like this winter with snow blower on PTO. Would be working fine, then engine would pull down. White smoke out of breather smelled like gas. Then stall out. Would start back up. Worse when hot. Not consistent. Could happen anytime. Any thoughts ? Have cleaned carb. Replaced coil. still does it.

Hi Larry- I had to replace my solenoid on my 550 gas tractor. The old one had 3 posts , the new one has 4 posts.I ran a ground wire from one of the small terminals to the mounting bolt. I tested the new solenoid on the starter when the starter was removed, and all worked fine. Put back on tractor and starter won`t work. battery and cables connections are ok. any suggestions?

The 550 is supposed to have a 3 post solenoid. I'd take that 4 post one back to my supplier and get the correct one. Larry

Can and how do you set the hydraulics to float position on a 150? want to try this out on a planter this year.

Re(1): 2-150

IP: 184.21.185.185 Posted on April 14, 2014 at 07:15:34 AM by Larry Harsin

I'm not familiar with that system. You should get an Operator's Manual. You can get one from the museum in Charles City. 641-228-1099. Larry

Re(2): 2-150

IP: 69.66.110.149 Posted on April 15, 2014 at 02:01:32 PM by 2-stroke dd

There is no way to make a detent valve on a 2-150 float. If you want a float position you will have to find a salvage yard that has a float valve off of anything from a 1755 all the way up to a 4-225. All of the tractors in this range could be bought with an optional float valve but very few were so they may be hard to find. The yards around here get between 200 and 250 for them.

I have an oliver 550 that i still use for taking care of our farm it has been in our family for awhile.I have been trying to figure out what kind of oil if any goes in the PTO..I see what appears to be a weep hole which is a square plug located next to the PTO shaft ,on the right but no where above it to pour in any oil.did not know if it was for gear oil or hydrolic or other. Unfortunately I wasn't taught much about maintenance just how to operate, been driving the tractor since I was a small child but never really worked on it....

Re(1): Oliver 550

IP: 184.21.185.185 Posted on April 14, 2014 at 07:13:30 AM by Larry Harsin

First of all, you need to get an Operator's Manual. You can get one from the Museum in Charles City. 641-228-1099 The PTO is oiled from the transmission. The transmission uses 80 - 90 Gear Lube. The Gear Lube is put in at the cap below the steering wheel. Larry

Just purchased a 1650 with good hyd's and steering but no 3 pt. function. Fluid level good, bypass screw turned in. Lever linkage is hooked up and moving but feels like not attached somewhere inside maybe? Have heard of a roll pin shearing off in these units possibly?

Super 88 Hydraulic Unit

IP: 208.126.157.115 Posted on April 5, 2014 at 09:49:10 PM by Zach

Hello. I have a super 88 and the hydraulics are getting very weak. I think I may also have a cracked center plate on the pump because I am slowly losing hydraulic fluid into the gear case. I have found a hydraulic unit off of a 1950 Oliver 88. Would this fit and work on my super 88? I think my 88 may have the electro unit, as there are two wire cables hanging off the hydraulic unit. Thanks for the help.

Yes. That pump from the 88 should work. The pump you are having trouble with, may have worn end plates and possibly they can be resurfaced. Larry

550 fixed front axle repair

IP: 98.168.216.149 Posted on April 3, 2014 at 09:40:31 PM by Larry K

I need to repair a fixed front axle on a 550. 1. What is the proper angle for the pivot pin. 2. Should this angle tip the spindles forward? Larry, I know you have addressed this before, but could not find it in your archives.

IP: 184.21.185.185 Posted on April 7, 2014 at 07:32:01 AM by Larry Harsin

I don't have any specs on this. I think it should be a slight amount. The wheels should tip forward slightly. I think if you would hook them up to the radius rods, that should be approx. correct. Larry
