1952 Oliver 77 Rowcrop

IP: 216.81.81.80 Posted on January 30, 2012 at 03:59:28 PM by Rick Beaulieu

I hope that you can help me out. First of all let say that I have rebuilt 5 other tractors that are of the green color however never an Oliver. I have a 1952 Oliver 77 Row Crop and have two issues that I need help with. The first one being that I cannot get it to shift into the low side of the over/under tranny utilizing the gear shifter. I have removed the hydraulic pump and the floor pan cover. I can get the center shift shaft for the over/under to move forward by hitting the end of it with a brass drift. Shifting it back the opposite way is easily done by hand. It acts as if whatever keeps the shaft from kicking out is not allowing it to shift into gear. The other issue is that I have a leak where the PTO shaft and the crankshaft coupler connect. I need to know where to get a seal for this area. It appears that what caused the old seal to be ruined is that the coupler was not reinstalled properly at some point in time.

IP: 75.104.168.113 Posted on January 30, 2012 at 11:23:34 PM by Larry Harsin

The seal behind the drive shaft coupler is Oliver part # K620. There is also a felt which is K620A. You can get these from your AGCO Dealer. If you have a belt pulley drive, you will also need K686 gasket. The shifting problem is a worn poppet block. It is also available from AGCO. Larry

energy cell

IP: 99.194.30.57 Posted on January 29, 2012 at 06:17:46 PM by allen

hey larry, i was wondering what the energy cells do in the oliver diesels also i have a little oil blowng out of the edge of the energy cell what needs to be done about that? it stops after the motor warms up, any info would be helpful

Re(1): energy cell

IP: 75.104.168.113 Posted on January 30, 2012 at 06:57:30 AM by Larry Harsin

It's actually a combustion chamber. If there is oil coming around the edge of it, just tighten the cap a little. If that doesn't do it, remove the cap and blow out the cell with compressed air. Clean the sealing surfaces, then reassemble. Larry

Super Series Front Grill Colors

I am a new collector of Oliver Super Series tractors and am wanting to know where a good source of information for the correct front end colors would be? Are Toys researched and can they be counted on as correct? Did Supers have a Red "oliver" emblem on the front?

IP: 75.104.168.104 Posted on January 28, 2012 at 07:36:57 AM by Larry Harsin

The strip on the front of the tractor that says Oliver is painted green. The yellow I use is called "Old Catipiller Yellow". Don't know anything about Toys Researched. Find some pictures of Olivers and look at them. There are some on a different page of this website. Larry

1650 timing

IP: 75.207.166.91 Posted on January 26, 2012 at 06:59:38 PM by Matt

Hi Larry, we swiched our 265 diesel motor with a 283 diesel motor in an 88. We are using the 88 fly wheel and bell housing. Should we set the fly wheel at TDC to time the pump or try and find 4 deg before TDC? Thanks

Re(1): 1650 timing

IP: 75.104.168.104 Posted on January 27, 2012 at 07:23:26 AM by Larry Harsin

I believe I'd go for the 4 degrees before TDC on this one. You may have to try different settings to determine where it runs the best. If you had a dynomometer, you could use that to help make the determination. Larry

Timing an Oliver 1855 diesel

IP: 71.32.138.44 Posted on January 25, 2012 at 12:59:29 PM by Ken

I know the timing is 4 degrees before TDC but I don't see any marks on flywheel when viewed through inspection plate. How do I set the timing without any guide marks on flywheel?

Re(1): Timing an Oliver 1855 diesel

IP: 75.104.168.104 Posted on January 26, 2012 at 07:51:02 AM by Larry Harsin

There has to be timing marks on that flywheel. If the degree tape is worn off, then you must use the mark that is actually stamped into the flywheel. Don't time it at 4 degrees before TDC like they always used to do. Time it at TDC. Larry

S88 axle bearing removal

IP: 24.63.165.125 Posted on January 25, 2012 at 10:07:39 AM by Dan

Do you have a preferred method of removing the Inner axle bearing races out of their housings on a super 88? The I&T book says to pull the snap rings, but those are big ones and I didnt have much luck trying to get one out. Do you often see the right sides worn worse than left side?

Re(1): S88 axle bearing removal

IP: 75.104.168.104 Posted on January 26, 2012 at 07:49:16 AM by Larry Harsin

If you can't get that snap ring out with the housing in the tractor, remove the axle housing and it will be easier to get at it. I take a small vice-grip to get hold of that snap ring. You can hold it better with it. I don't necessarily see the right side worn more than the left. Larry

Re(2): S88 axle bearing removal

IP: 24.63.165.125 Posted on January 26, 2012 at 09:14:26 PM by Dan

Thanks Larry I'll try that. Is there enough room in the axle housing to get the race all the way thru from the outside (outer) end?

IP: 75.104.168.104 Posted on January 28, 2012 at 07:58:54 AM by Larry Harsin

Yes. There is, but I don't do it that way. I usually just remove the housing and do it that way. Larry

Hart Parr Oliver 70 Engine Identification

IP: 173.13.14.21 Posted on January 25, 2012 at 09:33:08 AM by Bill Little

I have a 1936 Hart Parr 70 which I am restoring, The issue I have is the engine has no prefix/suffix to state HC or KD therefore I assume it is a HC. The problem lies in the carb installed on the tractor, I have an original manual from 1939 which shows the current carb to be the KD style. How else do I further Identify the components in the engine to prove one way or the other?

Re(1): Hart Parr Oliver 70 Engine Identification

IP: 75.104.168.104 Posted on January 26, 2012 at 07:44:50 AM by Larry Harsin

The KD has a different manifold than the gas. Also, the KD has a separate little gas tank( about a gallon size) to hold gas to start the engine before switching over to kerosene. Larry

Oliver 60 Standard, Exhaust

IP: 74.83.66.198 Posted on January 24, 2012 at 09:17:05 PM by Gary Ostendorf

Hi Mr Harsin, I am trying to help out brother in law. Recently purchased an Oliver 60 Standard. I was surprised to see it has an aluminum hood. He purchased a new muffler but not sure how to install it. Should there be a piece between the manifold and the muffler? The manifold appears to be correct perhaps an old piece of a previous muffler is rusted into the inside of the manifold and the new muffler should slide directly into it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Gary

Re(1): Oliver 60 Standard, Exhaust

IP: 75.104.168.104 Posted on January 25, 2012 at 07:53:06 AM by Larry Harsin

The muffler sits down in the manifold. Right after WWII, there was a shortage of sheet metal, so they used aluminum for the hoods. Larry

No. I don't. There might be some in an Operator's Manual. The 88 Parts Manual will show it. You can get either of these manuals from the Museum in Charles City IA 641-228-1099. Larry Re(1): 88 wiring tubes IP: 209.50.26.189 Posted on January 25, 2012 at 09:16:02 PM by bastar Located in front of the axle on LH side and behind axle on RH side. Tab goes under the center axle housing bolt on both sides, clip bolts to the side of the platform.

I have a 1950 Oliver. It is in good shape and still used to farm. I need to change the clutch. Do I need to pull out the shaft the runs through the transmission? How do I pull the shaft? What do I need to look out for. Thanks

Re(1): 1950

IP: 75.104.168.6 Posted on January 24, 2012 at 09:52:15 AM by Larry Harsin

Yes. That shaft has to be removed, as it runs the hydraulic and the PTO. There is a little tin cover that pops out on that top bearing mount on the PTO housing. Inside you will find a snap ring that has to be removed. It is in there about 3 inches deep. Then, using a long 1/2 inch coarse thread bolt, screw it into the plug in there, 2 or 3 turns and pull that plug out. Then, you will have an O ring to remove, It sealed the plug into the shaft. Using the long 1/2 inch bolt again, thread it into the PTO drive shaft and pull it out of the tractor. Larry

IP: 166.217.187.178 Posted on January 26, 2012 at 06:00:45 AM by Joe Wicen

Shaft is out. Clutch is worn, but doesn't appear as it failed. I was chisel plowing and heard a pop and lost power. Engine runs fine. I could get the 1950 to inch along, but no power. Is there a way I can test the Hydro power unit, with it out of the tractor.

Re(3): 1950

IP: 75.104.168.104 Posted on January 26, 2012 at 07:42:18 AM by Larry Harsin

You need to decide if it is your transmission or your hydra-power. Then, inspect for broken pieces etc. Take the cover off of the hydra-power and check that. You probably should get a qualified mechanic to check this out. You probably don't have the right tools to check this out. To test it out of the tractor, you have to be able to turn the input shaft fast enough so that you can check the pressures etc. If you are going to do it yourself, you should get a Shop Manual from the Museum in Charles City IA. Phone 641-228-1099. Larry

IP: 67.142.181.24 Posted on January 27, 2012 at 06:09:27 PM by Larry from MD

You can test the overrunning clutch.Have some one hold one shaft and try to turn the other, they should hold one way and slip easy the other.

1850 diesel

IP: 75.111.136.244 Posted on January 20, 2012 at 08:19:23 AM by j.ulmer

Glad to see ya'll still blowing & going. Do you think the Perkins diesels in Massey Furgeson 915 combine would bolt up to bell housing on 1850 Oliver? Are the 1850's different as far as bell housing to block between gas, propane and diesel? I know small 4 cyl perkins in massey tracgtors like ag and industrial and the industrial power units CAN vary or can match, but I do not know how to match the 6 cylinders without having them side by side. I figured you might have prior experience. Thanks!

Re(1): 1850 diesel

IP: 69.72.27.159 Posted on January 20, 2012 at 12:14:22 PM by larry from md.

I think you mean 510 combines.most guys change the whole rear of a combine engine + the flywheel to make them fit the oliver clutch houseing .The fronts are changed too so the moter mounts are the same. The 750 and 760 combine engines can be used allso if you have the 1850 with the later engine(looks like the one in a 2-85).

Re(2): 1850 diesel

IP: 75.104.161.94 Posted on January 21, 2012 at 08:23:15 AM by Larry Harsin

It is not a simple procedure to take an engine out of a Massey combine and put it into an Oliver tractor. One of the major problems is the front engine mount. But there are other differences also. Larry

You could get a 3 bottom plow with ease. That is as large as you will need. Up to a 14 foot disc. Any size grain drill. It will handle a 4 row planter with ease. You may not need a 4 row with 10 acres. That tractor is capable of handling a lot more acres than you are doing. It's a good tractor to have. Larry

Purchased 1850 Diesel about 6 years ago. Great tractor. Last month had fuel system rebuilt, pump, injectors. Runs good. Guys on the farm called yesterday said while grinding feed started to make a tapping noise and then alot of smoke came out of breather connected to valve cover. Trying to figure out where smoke would come from that would get to the valves. Since then - all seems ok / oil pressure up / all systems go. value you opinion. thanks

What's going on is that you are losing compression around a piston or more than one. I would guess that you have some broken rings. The tractor is in need of an overhaul. Larry
