1959 Oliver 550

Posted by Todd Wilson on June 25, 2017, 6:10 pm 72.240.195.92

I recently restored my grandfather's 550 complete engine rebuild split all seals, almost everything...I notice when I add hydraulic fluid for the 3 point it works it's way into the gear casing. I can't seem to find a seal rebuild kit for the hydraulic. Any suggestions? Thank you

1965 1650 Gear Shift Jammed

Posted by Ted on June 25, 2017, 10:04 pm 24.165.216.36

The shift lever on my 1650 is jammed between 3rd and 6th gear. I am assuming that if I take out thew two visible bolts, I will be able to pull the shifter out and reach in with a big screw driver and un-jam it? Thanks.

That should work. If it doesn't work, you will have to remove the Shift Tower for better access. Larry

brake repair/replcement

I have a 1965 Oliver 550 gas. Location of brakes and how to replace or repair? Applying rake not much stopping power. Fuel filter location? Obviously I am new to tractor repairs. Thanks Charlie

First of all, you need to get an Operator's Manual!! You can get one from the Floyd Co. Museum in Charles City, IA, where the tractor was built! It will tell you the location for adjusting the brakes and many, many other things you need to know about your tractor. Their phone (so you can use a credit card) is 641-228-1099. Larry

Mysterious holes in transmission bell of Oliver 1600

Posted by Frank Weller on June 20, 2017, 6:27 pm 68.43.148.103

There are two one-inch holes in the transmission bell of my Oliver 1600 gas. They're located near where the starter connects and are plugged by one-inch dowel rods. Nobody in my family seems to know what they're there for. Any thoughts about why they might be there and what we should do about it?

Posted by Larry Harsin on June 22, 2017, 11:24 am, in reply to "Mysterious holes in transmission bell of Oliver 1600" 184.21.154.199

One hole was for a grease tube for a greased style throw-out bearing. Some tractors have been changed a greaseless style. I don't know about the other hole. Larry

1650 steering issue

Posted by Mike Eich on June 21, 2017, 6:39 am 198.169.128.2

My 1650 got into a hard right turn while backing up the other day, and locked up. I was able to get it to steer well enough to get it into the shed, when I looked at it last night it turns to the left OK but only will go to straight and not into a right turn. I jacked it up and tried it with the engine running and turned off. Same results. Do you have any idea what to look at. It still has the old style hydramotor on the steering column. Thanks

Re: 1650 steering issue

Posted by Larry Harsin on June 22, 2017, 11:28 am, in reply to "1650 steering issue" 184.21.154.199

You may have a problem in the Pittman Arm and Pittman Shaft. It could be stripped splines on that. If everything seems to be o.k. there, there may be a problem where the steering column hooks into the steering motor in the dash. If it is this problem, give me a call so we can talk about it, 712-362-2966. Larry

1850 Oliver Converting to Direct Drive Do Away with Hydo Power

Posted by Erv Hamilton on June 21, 2017, 10:10 pm 72.168.160.13

Larry: Have you done this in the past and what parts are needed and the availability. I know this isn't a common practice to do away with the hydro power and make it a direct drive, but considering it. The Hydro Power is out. Thanks for any information. Erv Hamilton

Yes. You'll have to get a different bell housing and a different drive shaft and chain coupling where it hooks on to the transmission. Larry

Oliver 1550 Steering???

Posted by Tom Cooley on June 20, 2017, 2:44 pm 165.225.38.211 I just picked up a 1550 to complete my line up - a 770 to mow hay, a 550 to rake and now the 1550 to pull the NH 273 baler and kicker wagon. But on the 1550, I notice that the tractor drifts to the right slightly - after turning the wheel to the left it comes back, then another correction to the left and another, and I realize I turn the wheel 1 full turn to left and still it tracks to the right when I'm not paying attention. Is there no mechanical link between the Strg wheel and the front wheels? (wide front end). Is a key sheared or something?

Posted by Larry Harsin on June 22, 2017, 11:21 am, in reply to "Oliver 1550 Steering???" 184.21.154.199

No. There is no mechanical link. What you are complaining about is not unusual. Make sure your front tires have equal air pressure. If the problem becomes severe, you may have to replace your hydra-motor. Larry

Posted by Tom Cooley on June 22, 2017, 11:40 am, in reply to "Re: Oliver 1550 Steering???" 165.225.38.211

Thanks! I did find that the wheel brg spindle threads were damaged to the point where the nut slipped to the point where the cotter pin was all holding it. That should explain the drift (one wheel being canted) For others, I tried for days to find what size nut, couldn't find out anywhere - so I measured it - it is 1-1/8-12 (SAE fine). Went with Gr 5 from Fastenal stock, and it drew it back nicely (now just hope there are enough threads on the spindle to hang on). I'll test drive it tonight Thanks again! Love this forum

60 Oliver quit moving tho in gear

Posted by Karen Vink on June 20, 2017, 1:07 pm 69.66.115.190

My friends restored Oliver 60 ran fine, then seemed to coast/grab to move, then after shut off, it would not move when in gear, not forward nor reverse. some say is axle, some say pinnions. Any way to figure out what has happened as to where to check first? Thanks...we are to go on a Tractor Ride trip two days in mid July!

Re: 60 Oliver quit moving tho in gear

Posted by Larry Harsin on June 22, 2017, 11:17 am, in reply to "60 Oliver quit moving tho in gear" 184.21.154.199

You will have to jack it up and start checking it out. If you think it is an axle, jack up one rear wheel at a time and see which one is binding ,. You also need to check and see if one of the brakes is bound up. Did you check the oil level for the rear end? You could also check the oil level in the rear end. If it was low, it could be a bearing seized up in the transmission. Larry

Oliver 1550 diesel

Posted by Paul Bartlett on June 20, 2017, 12:45 am 107.77.85.96

I bought the tractor back in February, it had set for about 10 years. Put a hot battery and new fuel and it cranked for about 20 seconds and fired right up on a 23 degree day ( used a little ether of corse). Have been using ever since with no problems, plowed a couple acres, cut 8 acres of hay, but at the end of bailing the 8 acres the engine acted as it was under a load even with the clutch pushed in, black smoked real bad and then died. It did not want to start back up so I waited till the next day. It started right up but only ran for a couple of minutes and then it did the same thing again. I changed all fluids and filters when I got it. I have read that if I have a plugged return line that this might cause a diesel to bog down and black smoke. Any suggestions? Thanks Paul

The gap is .025. This is for the year 1950. The 1950 Oliver never had any gas engines. You need to get an Operator's Manual from the Museum in Charles City, IA 641-228-1099. Your 1950 is the year the tractor was built. Larry

Hello we have a 1755 with three speed transmission. At times it seems to get stuck in on the low side of the tranny. At times it if you put in neutral and shake it back and forth it fixes the problem. Other times no mater what it just stays in low. Do you have any ideas on this? The three speed seems to shift fine. Thx Dave

Oliver 770 gas hydraulic

I put new seals in the hydraulic pump and after putting back together it leaks hydraulic oil into the transmission. The pump looks good. I was wondering what I might have done wrong. I think it probably is the seals got pushed out but am not sure.

1800 hydraulics

Posted by justin d baze on June 7, 2017, 10:17 pm 72.168.144.124

I was trying to hook up the power beyond and some how got mixed up when they said to put a 3/8 plug way back in the 1/2 plug hole nearest the filter on the left side and there is a plunger and spring back there that threaded on the plug and when i took my tool out the plug came out and the spring and plunger came part way. I don't see in the manual what or how to access them or to know what there for. I later realized that the plug hole I needed to use was the 3/8 plug on the same side but on the hydra-elect housing. Any info would help.

1600 hyd problem

Posted by Alan Tabor on June 5, 2017, 7:59 pm 162.216.214.205

Hi and thank you for this web site. I have a hydraulic problem that showed up today on my 1963 Oliver 1600, serial #128735. My remote cylinder quit working. Checked the hydraulic oil level and nothing on the dipstick. I put more oil in but later same problem. I can't find any external leaks. Could the oil be going into the the transmission / rear end? If so do you have any suggestions what I should look for. Thank you Alan

Re: 1600 hyd problem

Posted by Larry Harsin on June 6, 2017, 7:42 am, in reply to "1600 hyd problem" 184.21.154.199

Check the oil level on the transmission and see if it is higher! If it is higher, it could be a hole in the oil pan or a pump seal has gone out. Larry

Re: 1600 hyd problem

Posted by Paul A Berndt on June 7, 2017, 6:47 pm, in reply to "1600 hyd problem" 69.42.228.47

If hyd level going down watch rear end level if the comes up you have seal problem on pump or a leak between hyd tank and rear end.

Oliver 1880 gas won't move.

Posted by Kel on June 3, 2017, 3:36 pm 208.126.21.103

Hi Larry: Was mowing hay today with this 1800 gas Oliver. Just into the second round of cutting the tractor stopped moving. Stills runs but will not move. When in gear and the motor running, I can let the clutch out and it will not move. The double chain where it connects to the final drive, is not turning. When out of gear, it wants to turn, but once in gear it does not. I'm thinking we have a bad hydro unit...Would like to know your thoughts on what else it could be. The tractor never acted up prior to this behavior, oil level is good also. I would think if the clutch was bad, we wouldn't be able to get in gear. Also, it does not matter what side the Hi/lo hydro unit is in, it still will not move. Gotta a gut feeling its the hydro unit, but would like to have more of a clarification prior to pulling this thing out. Thanks Kel
