White Field boss 2-85 pto

Posted by Jake McDonald on March 25, 2017, 2:13 pm 174.209.28.147

I'm looking at a 2-85 I need a tractor with 1000 PTO these units seem to have both. This one has a 540 on the bottom and a cover plate on spot above it. Question is how do I make it a 1000pto?

The spot above it is for engine speed. If it is dual speed, there will be a shifter on the bottom of the housing and there should be extra 1000 shaft. This is a explained in the Operator's Manual. You can get an Operator's Manual by calling the Museum in Charles City, IA 641-228-1099. Larry

71.251.167.78 The gear shift lever is very loose its been that way since I bought the tractor. It operates ok I am able to shift into all the gears. When I shift into low range reverse the shifter hits the steering column and the dash. Are there bushings or something that tightens it up .

What you are finding is a common find. You could try a different shift lever & tower. I have these. Or you can simply take a torch and heat and bend the lever so that it doesn't hit the dash. Larry 712-362-2966

Oliver 1550 Cracked Head

Posted by Matt on March 23, 2017, 1:05 pm 165.225.34.90

I have a 1550 diesel (Waukesha) with what I thought was a bad head gasket. Once the head was removed I noticed cracks running between the intake and exhaust valves on 3 cylinders. They are maybe 1/4" to 1/2" deep. Have you ever heard of anyone repairing cracks like this? Maibach in Ohio has a used one thats been checked for $850 (plus shipping to Texas). I haven't been able to locate any other used ones yet. If I go that route, should I plan on rebuilding the head, or is it likely that valves, springs, etc... will be good?

I would take the head they have for $850. Ask them first if it has been reconditioned. That is a hard one to find. I don't have one. Larry

Oliver 770 AMP light

Posted by Mike Renner on March 19, 2017, 3:40 pm 73.81.150.7

Larry, The AMP light came on on my 1965 Oliver 770 gas. Can a weak battery cause the light to come on or could it possibly be the voltage regulator? The battery is getting old and the regulator is around 15 years old. The alternator seems to be ok because I get around 14.5v at the battery when tractor is running. Thank you for your time and help. The light is supposed to go out when the tractor is running. Are you sure your alternator is running properly? With 14.5 V. it sounds like it is. I'm not sure what to say is wrong. Possibly your regulator. Larry

Gear Oil Change and Spinning Gears on a Oliver Super 55

Posted by Larry Broderick on March 16, 2017, 2:02 pm 199.168.151.121

I am looking to replace the gear/transmission oil in an Oliver Super 55. I have the manual and know the process. I am wondering what the correct fluid to use is. I live in Upstate NY and use the tractor to log firewood, brush hog, and plow snow. I have read that I should use 85w140. Will any grade work? Do I need anything special to save the PTO clutches?

Also, lately I have noticed that when the tractor has been used for a while and brought up to temp, the gear box is still spinning when the clutch is pressed down. It seems like a bearing is dragging because I will push the clutch in and the gears stop but if I leave the shifter in neutral at all, the gears begin to spin. If I idle the tractor down to almost stalling and I shift quickly into gear, it will shift and stop the gears from spinning. Also if I shift quickly from gear to gear, the gears donÕt have time to begin to spin. IÕm wondering if heavier gear lube will create enough drag to prevent the gears from spinning?

Thank you for all your help. Your advice and archives helped keep an old Oliver digging out a lot of snowy driveways this week in Upstate NY!

The 85w140 is fine. I tend to use 80-90, but the 85w140 may give it enough drag to help slow the spinning. You don't need anything special for the PTO. Thank you for the compliments. I am glad to be of help to Oliver People. Larry

1957 OLIVER SUPER 55 DIESEL CLUTCH SLIPPING?

Posted by RON on March 11, 2017, 7:48 pm 96.27.153.50

MY 1957 OLIVER SUPER 55 DIESEL APPEARS TO BE LACKING POWER WHEN ENGINE IS UNDER LOAD - PUSHING WITH BLADE, ETC. THE TRACTOR USED TO HAVE MORE POWER AND WOULD SPIN TIRES WHILE TRYING TO MOVE A LOAD. NOW WHEN CLUTCH IS LET OUT THE TRACTOR JUST ACTS LIKE CLUTCH IS SLIPPING NOT ALLOWING ENGINE / TRANSMISSION TO UTILIZE FULL POWER WITH RPM'S UP. ANY IDEAS? THANKS, RON

If the clutch is slipping, the tractor may have to be split and the clutch repaired. Before you began to do tis, get a S55 Shop Manual before you start on it. You can get one from the Museum in Charles City, IA. 641-228-1099. Larry

1655 Hydraulics

Posted by RALPH CARPENTER on March 10, 2017, 6:48 pm 208.114.152.168

One hydraulic valve is affecting the other. Example: When hooked on to snow plow the left lever for raise and lower and the right lever is hooked to swing. When you go to swing the plow it automatically raises it up. After you release the swing lever you can let it back down and it works fine until you want to swing it again. Where do I look for the problem? Thank you.

Oliver 1600

Posted by Frank Weller on March 9, 2017, 9:17 am 68.43.148.103

My uncle gifted me the Oliver 1600 that I "grew up" on and we are in the process of trailering it from Indiana to Michigan as I type. It is the row crop model with a gas engine. It hasn't been started in probably a decade. My uncle tells me that, near as he can recall, it had some "rear end issues," but that the motor ran fine when he parked it. What do I need to know before I resurrect it? I am assuming that I need to change all the fluids and replace the plugs, plug wires and points. Really, though, I have no idea where to start. Any advice you can give me will be most appreciated. Thanks!

I'd remove the valve cover and make sure there are no valves sticking before I tried to turn the engine very much. Larry

1800 Oliver distributor problems

Posted by Wes Blevins on March 6, 2017, 7:44 pm 64.250.60.87

Larry, Recently while feeding hay with my 1800 A gas it decided to lay down on me. As it was dark and I had used some "suspect fuel out of the tank I just assumed I had sucked up some bad gas an would address the situation in the daylight hours. Upon investigation the next morning I discovered that the problem was not fuel related but an ignition issue. I found that I had no spark and upon pulling the cap I found the rotor to be broke in pieces. I replaced the rotor and she immediately fired off but I soon noticed that the rotor was making contact with the cap. I failed to notice when I installed the new rotor there seems to been excessive up and down movement in the distributor shaft that is allowing my rotor to contact the cap. My assumption was that there was possibly a bearing or roll pin in the distributor that had failed, but I have completely dissembled the distributor and only found a brass bushing which seems to be in good shape and the roll pin which holds the gear onto the distributor shaft intact and in good shape. So I'm unsure what is allowing the up and down slop in the distributor shaft that's allowing the rotor to contact the cap? To delve into the issue further it appears that the gears that run off of the cam and oil pump slots that engage the distributor shaft seem to show no wear. Any thoughts? And my apologies for the long post. Thanks, Wes

I'm wondering if a plastic cover, that goes over the points is missing. If so, that would allow the cap to set too close to the rotor. Another thought --- could it be an incorrect cap or an incorrect rotor. These are just my thoughts. Larry

Re: 1800 Oliver distributor problems

Posted by Wes Blevins on March 9, 2017, 1:23 pm, in reply to "Re: 1800 Oliver distributor problems" 66.87.73.51

Thanks for the input Larry. I'm fairly confident that the cap and rotor are correct. The dust cover over the points is in place. I did a little surgery and tore the distributor apart. I'm fairly certain that the shims that sit underneath the shaft are worn terribly and may even have some missing. I ordered a new kit with shims and the brass bushing for the shaft. But I'm not 100 percent certain what the end play should be in the distributor. The kit came with 4 shims, but no direction on where or how many to use. Do have any thoughts or by chance know that the end play on the delco Remy distributor should be?

oliver 70

Posted by tim on March 5, 2017, 7:35 pm 209.105.151.223

I have a 1938 oliver 70. My dad and nephew took it apart about 7 year ago. It has the steering rods that connect it to the brakes. This 70 does not have the right brake pedal that pushes both brakes at once. It has individual brake pedals that you push down. We also made it from a 4 speed to now a 6 speed by taking out the inserts inside the transmission. Is it a good idea to hook up the steering rods to the brakes or leave them out? If so, do you have any pictures of which sides the springs hook on the steering hub and I also need to know how to connect the 2 rods together and where do they attack to the brakes? all the books I have show the dual brake pedals. I did find a picture of the steering rods, but not how they hook up, thanks.

I would not hook up the steering rods to the brakes! If you have a 6 speed transmission, it may upset the tractor. This has been experienced in cases like this. Larry

You may have a swing cylinder that is the problem or it may be a control valve that is the problem. You are going to have to figure that out. One way to check it would be to disconnect the swing cylinder and see if you can manually move the boom by hand. Larry

Oliver super 55 3 point arms

I was curious if you could help me fiqure out why my 3 point arms won't move on my Oliver. The control lever moves smoothly but my arms are just sitting in one place. There is plenty of hydraulic fluid in the tractor.

There may be something disconnected on the control linkage on the inside of the unit. This means you may have to remove the entire unit from the tractor. Larry

1755 gas with Zenith carb

Posted by Jake Young on February 26, 2017, 6:07 am 68.45.39.65

Hello, I have a 1755 gas tractor. I am having trouble finding any information on how exactly to set up my Zenith carb. Not even the rebuild kit came with any directions. It stumbles when you go to give it throttle. You have to really ease into it and the main jet on the bottom has always leaked. I believe it's a model 69. Thanks

Re: 1755 gas with Zenith carb

Posted by Larry Harsin on March 8, 2017, 10:03 am, in reply to "1755 gas with Zenith carb " 184.21.154.199

There isn't much info available about that carb. I know what you are talking about.. I would make certain that plenty of fuel is getting to the carb from the fuel tank. I'd remove the fuel strainer assembly from the fuel tank and make sure there is no foreign material in the neck of the fuel strainer. You may have to get a new main jet needle to stop that leak on the load needle. Larry

Oliver 60 repower

Posted by Zack baker on February 26, 2017, 12:20 am 71.164.68.83

I just picked up a 1948 Oliver 60 and am considering an engine swap. I can easily get ahold of a clark forklift with a Waukesha d176g which I believe is similar to a d155 that I read was similar to an Oliver 550 engine. Any idea if any of this is true? Looks like a very similar engine and the engine seems to mount about the same way. Biggest question would be overall size and clutch/bellhousing. Any insight is very appreciated !

The engines are a lot different and I don't think it would be feasible to do it. You would also have to manufacture engine mounts etc. We have been gone. Sorry for the delayed answer. Larry

Found torque specs for rods and head bolts. But still need torque specs for the rocker arm shaft bolts and clearances for rod bearings and piston ring end gap if you could please Thanks
