It's supposed to help it start in cold weather. The Operator's Manual explains all of this. You can get an Operator's Manual from the Museum in Charles City IA. 641-228-1099. Larry

Governor

IP: 66.87.144.239 Posted on November 24, 2013 at 01:29:00 PM by kevin koplitz

I have a 1965 Oliver 550, when I start it, it goes right to wide open thottle does this sound like it could be the govenor. If it is the govenor is this something that should be fixed or can you disconnect it and run without a govenor

Re(1): governor

IP: 184.21.185.185 Posted on November 26, 2013 at 07:40:10 AM by Larry Harsin

I'd take it apart and see what is wrong with it. It might be just stickie leakage. I wouldn't try to operate it without a governor. Larry

You need to get an Operator's Manual. The wiring diagram and many other things are in that book. You can get one from the museum in Charles City IA. 641-228-1099. Larry

Oliver heads

IP: 172.242.145.118 Posted on November 21, 2013 at 06:30:05 PM by corre kaminski

Larry would all the energy cell heads valve depth be the same I have a 1650 diesel with energy cells was wondering if a 1800 or 88 would give me the recess of the intake and exhaust valves Thanks for any info and your time can only find info on the direct injection heads

Re(1): Oliver heads

IP: 184.21.185.185 Posted on November 23, 2013 at 08:30:56 AM by Larry Harsin

The 1650 is more like the 1800 C, but the 88 is different. But, on all three of these that you mention, I like the intake valve to be flush with the head surface, not recessed more than .015. Larry

Oliver #????

IP: 69.179.138.161 Posted on November 21, 2013 at 12:10:20 PM by Rick Tarnowski

This shade of green tractor is new to me. I just purchased , what I think is a 1650 gas model. The tag show it as a Model 265-1106 with a serial # of 163861-452. I can't find any info relating to those #'s and there are no decals left on it. My first set of questions: What are the recommended fluids to use throughout the tractor? The throttle linkage , hydra power linkage, and left brake pedal are all froze, stuck & will not move. Is it common for those to rust up or is there other issues? Is there any danger in operating the tractor in the wrong hydra power position? I know nothing about that feature and how it operates If I can gain some education on these issues , I can probably get the tractor home to dig deeper into it. Thanks in advance for your help & knowledge

You have a 1965 Oliver 1650. You need to get an Operator's Manual. It will tell you many of these things. You can get one from the museum in Charles City IA. 641-228-1099. I'd recommend 15-40 for the engine, type A ATF, med non-foaming hydraulic oil in the hydraulic and 80-90 gear lube in the transmission. I would put penetrating oil on those things stuck and get them freed up. On the hydra-power, it can be operated continuously in either the high or low range, however, it can free wheel in the low range. Larry

550 3 Point Lift

IP: 68.21.87.4 Posted on November 14, 2013 at 11:02:24 AM by Roy Wrightsman

What is the most likely cause to a 550 3 point settling and cycling? It lifts fine, but settles with a big enough load then raises, etc... I'm planning on tearing this apart this winter and was just curious what is the usual culprit with these.

1555 Oliver Gas

IP: 69.68.210.36 Posted on November 13, 2013 at 11:10:20 AM by Cole J.

I just purchased a 1555 Oliver Gas tractor and I am having trouble with the Carburetor "Icing" over. Is this a common problem with these tractors? How do I fix it? I have cleaned the carburetor but that didn't help. Does the 1555 and 1655 have the same Marvel Schebler Carburetor on them?

Re(1): 1555 Oliver Gas

IP: 184.21.185.185 Posted on November 14, 2013 at 07:32:40 AM by Larry Harsin

They both have Marvel-Shebler carbs, but they aren't the same. Make sure the tractor has a good thermostat so the engine warms up good. Larry

1650 hydraulic pump

IP: 173.248.9.9 Posted on November 12, 2013 at 10:18:31 AM by Karl

We are looking for a Oliver 1650 Diesel hydraulic pump kit. We bought the pump at A&I but they do not have a kit for us to purchase, do you know any other sources that might have this kit? I should clarify that we're looking for a seal kit.

1800 Fluids

IP: 69.42.224.184 Posted on November 11, 2013 at 08:48:41 AM by Matt E

I got my manual. Our temps get below zero so I will use 5w-20. Can I use a synthetic blend or stick to conventional? For the hydraulic fluid it says to use 10w oil and Oliver additive. Where can I find the additive or can I use something else? Also what oil goes in the air cleaner oil cup?

Re(1): 1800 Fluids

IP: 184.21.185.185 Posted on November 12, 2013 at 07:08:51 AM by Larry Harsin

That additive is no longer used. I would stick with conventional oil. On the hydraulic oil, I would use a med. non-foaming oil. For extreme temps. you could use a lighter non-foaming oil, but most of the time, use the medium. Larry

2-135 white hydraulics

IP: 24.114.36.31 Posted on November 10, 2013 at 01:08:35 PM by Wes Hamm

Runs Rough

IP: 68.199.184.101 Posted on November 7, 2013 at 05:09:00 PM by chris

I have an oliver 77 that used to run great,it wont even idle now. I tuned and cleaned the carb to specs, timing is perfect and it has great spark it runs but chokes up and spits sputters and backfires I just put new plugs in it too I cant get why she doesn't run like she used to

Re(1): Runs Rough

IP: 184.21.185.185 Posted on November 9, 2013 at 08:02:38 AM by Larry Harsin

It sounds to me like it is more in the ignition instead of the carbueration, but it could be either one. It might have a condenser going bad. Larry

Adjusting steering bands on an OC6 diesel crawler

IP: 199.187.183.36 Posted on November 6, 2013 at 04:53:45 PM by Harvey Saul

I recently picked up this little OC6 diesel crawler, I have been going thru changing fluids and getting it operational again. The one thing I have come across is that the steering bands seem to be a different style then the book, book says to remove pipe plug and use a heavy screw driver to adjust bands. I am half blind sometimes however I am not finding an adjuster screw on the band. I am finding a pivot point on the steering arm that has been tack welded. Are replacement bands available for this 350,000+ version.

Oliver 1450 Clutch

IP: 63.131.51.160 Posted on November 4, 2013 at 12:14:05 PM by John

Hi Larry, It's me again...Oliver 1450. My clutch will not disengage the transmission; therefore cannot get it into gear. It disengages the PTO when I push down further, but not the tranny. I have greased the clutch release bearing regularly and again recently to no avail.

Re(1): Oliver 1450 Clutch

IP: 63.131.51.160 Posted on November 5, 2013 at 11:13:16 AM by John

Sorry, I neglected to ask a specific question. I read in your archives a post to a similar problem that the clutch disks could possibly be "frozen" to the flywheel. Is that a possiblility in my case or is it possible that something else is locked up? Is it possible that something is out of adjustment?

Re(2): Oliver 1450 Clutch

IP: 184.21.185.185 Posted on November 5, 2013 at 07:11:10 AM by Larry Harsin

I'm not real familiar with the Fiat Olivers. It has the double clutch and probably the tractor will have to be taken apart to either replace broken parts or readjust the clutch. Larry

880 hydraulics

IP: 71.7.109.41 Posted on November 3, 2013 at 01:30:37 PM by Alex

I have a 1958 880 gas motor and a power booster. Im trying to get the hydraulics going again. Tractor had sat outside for many years before I repainted it and replaced the motor. Now looking to use it more and want the hydraulics to work. This tractor has the hydralectric option on it. I pulled the cover off and everything looks rusty. Went to pull the pto shaft out and it comes out about three feet and then it gets hung up. Not sure if there is a snap ring or something on the shaft I need to remove for the shaft to come out completely. Also just curious as to how much rebuilding I should do and where to get parts. Thanks!

Re(1): 880 hydraulics

IP: 184.21.185.185 Posted on November 4, 2013 at 06:46:06 AM by Larry Harsin

If there is rust all over the insides, I'm sure the pump itself will have to be rebuilt. The reservoir and the valves will have to be cleaned up and put back together with new rings and gaskets. If you want to send me your old pump, I can rebuild it, possibly. Or you can exchange it for a rebuilt pump, which will cost approx. $600. Larry

Re(2): 880 hydraulics

IP: 173.213.163.52 Posted on November 4, 2013 at 02:36:35 PM by Alex

ok thats kinda what i figured. Where would be the best place to get all the o rings and gaskets? Also any idea how to get the PTO drive shaft out? It only comes out halfway. Dunno if its hanging up on the hydraulic pump or what. And thanks Larry!

IP: 184.21.185.185 Posted on November 5, 2013 at 07:08:18 AM by Larry Harsin

I have O rings and gaskets here, or you can get them from Tom at O'Brien 'co Impl. 800-320-6224. About the shaft, there are splines that you have to match up to get it out of there. Larry

Oliver 1800 Capacities

IP: 69.42.224.184 Posted on November 2, 2013 at 02:46:04 PM by Matt Erickson

I just bought a 1961- 1800. I am curious on the fluid capacities for this tractor. I live in North Dakota so in winter it gets cold. Do you have info on service/parts manuals for this tractor? Would this be cosidered an A because of the year?

Towing

IP: 166.147.104.162 Posted on November 2, 2013 at 02:29:28 PM by sam

How would I be able to tow an Oliver 1800 gas tractor with hydrolic steering? I only have to go approximately 4 miles.

Re(1): Towing

IP: 184.21.185.185 Posted on November 4, 2013 at 06:39:40 AM by Larry Harsin

You'll have to lift the front end up with a 3 pt. or something like that on another tractor. Put it in neutral and tow it. You can call a wrecker. They can pick up the front end and tow it. Larry
