Does the tractor need to be running to lower the 3 piont hitch? I need to detach a brush hog to get tractor on a trailer. It's stuck in the up position now.. Thank you

Yes. The engine has to be running before you can lower that. Larry

Oil flow to rocker arm

IP: 69.31.202.124 Posted on November 27, 2015 at 10:06:55 AM by Bill Kenney

My oliver 77 shows good oil pressure but am not getting much oil flow to rocker and valves. What would cause this. Where is oil to rocker shaft fed from.

The oil comes from the rear main and it isn't a great amount of flow and is intermittent, because the crank has a slot that carries oil up to the top. If the rocker arm bushings and shaft are worn, you may have to renew them. I would be in favor of putting in the newer style of wickless rocker arms on, such as from a S 77 or a 770. Larry

Road gear speed

I own a 58 770. The road gear only runs about 8mph wide open. What's my options to increase this?? Might want to do a tractor ride sometime

On that particular model, there were different ring gear and pinion options. You apparently have a slow speed option. You can change the ring gear and pinion for a faster speed. Larry

Do you know of anyone, including yourself, that might have a ring and pinions for my 770??

I'll check and see if I have one. It is going to have to be a used part, so you will probably have to check with salvage yards if I don't have one. Larry

That would be great. And if you don't, being I live in Georgia, if you could throw a couple of names at me for wrecking yards would be great. Thanks again! Wes

I assume that you have a Special low speed ring and pinion, which will be a 948 ratio (9 teeth on bevel & 48 on the ring gear). The one I have is 1250 (12 teeth on the bevel & 50 on the ring gear). You can count the teeth. It will speed you up some. This is the most common one on the row crops. Larry 712-362-2966

1944 Oliver 70 RowCrop

IP: 74.43.60.71 Posted on November 17, 2015 at 09:15:59 AM by Richard

I have two separate questions about this tractor. One I have found some ball bearings when draining the Transmission area fluid, I have since come to realize that the bearings are from the bottom shaft and from the forward most wall when sitting on the tractor. Do you know if this bearing is available for purchase new or should I look for a used bottom shaft? Second I have realized that the Oliver 70 Heads have three part numbers on them an I cannot tell any real difference between them. I was curious if you happen to know the differences between them? Any information is greatly appreciated.

Take the number off of the bearing. Possibly you can find one at a salvage yard or go to an automotive supply store and see if they have one. As far as the differences in the cylinder heads, the 1st. style was for a 5 gear engine. It will not work on later engines. Therefore, when yo need a cylinder head, it is best to get the numbers off of your head and get one with the same numbers and get it matched. Larry

Well the bearing is in multiple pieces so unlikely I will be able to find a PN that way. So look for used piece. Richard

Super 55 starter issues???

IP: 184.63.188.139 Posted on November 15, 2015 at 07:14:26 PM by James Litton

My S55 will not turn over fast enough to crank and run. I can use a little starting fluid and she will fire off and run. I had the starter rebuilt by a pro service. I can turn the engine with a socket on the crankshaft with little effort. Today I adjusted the valves but made little improvement in the cranking RPM Starter will whirl the engine with the plugs removed. No strange noise. Do I go back to the starter for weak under load issues. ANY help will be greatly appreciated. I bought this 55 about 7 years ago and it has been in a enclosed shop not out in the weather.

IP: 184.21.143.147 Posted on November 16, 2015 at 08:45:01 AM by Larry Harsin

You could have an engine with enough wear that it doesn't have enough compression for good starting. Or you could have an injection pump that is not up to specs. These are just 2 of many things that can affect starting. Larry

You can get Manuals for all Oliver tractors at the Floyd County Museum in Charles City, IA. Charles City is where the tractors were built. Call the Museum 641-228-1099. They have Operator's Manuals which will tell you a lot about your tractor. They also have Shop Manuals and Parts Manuals. Larry

Oliver 66 carburetor

IP: 69.80.117.49 Posted on November 11, 2015 at 07:03:12 PM by Greg M

I have a Oliver 66 that I recently had the carburetor rebuilt. I have installed carburetor and having problems getting the tractor to start. It cranks quite awhile before it sputters and blows black smoke when it starts. It appears to me that the carb is flooded as I can smell gas and the black smoke. After tractor runs awhile, can shut off and will start back up on first spin. I thought rebuilding the carburetor would fix this problem but it has not. any ideas what may be happening or what needs adjusted to fix this problem? Thanks Greg M

If the carb. floods, the float valve isn't working properly. Larry

Oliver 88 questions

IP: 208.70.47.116 Posted on November 9, 2015 at 01:20:35 PM by Mitchell Cowan

Why are the brakes on an Oliver 88 or 77 or 66 positioned the way they are? And does an 88 have 2-way or 1-way hydraulics. I would like to know since I have an Oliver 3 bottom pull type hydraulic plow that I needed to get a new cylinder for and I would like to know which way to set it up as as a 2 or 1 way. I would test the hydraulics myself and find out but I just don't have the time to do so.Thanks in advance

I would get a 2 way cylinder. Your tractor has 2 way hydraulics, so I would set it up that way. Larry

1650 Oil line to rocker arms

IP: 167.142.141.179 Posted on November 5, 2015 at 10:21:38 PM by Todd

Put new main & rod bearings along with new rings and gaskets on 1650 gas. Got it started tonight and everything looked and sounded great. But then noticed that no oil was coming through the head bolt to the supply line to the rocker arms. took the bolt out but no oil is coming out at all. We are seeing 35 psi on the oil gauge so there is pressure. Any idea on why we are not getting oil to that line? Also, does the oil gauge line connect to the valley that feeds the head bolt that supplies oil to the rocker arms? And finally, if the rear main bearing was for some reason not placed right and the holes don't line up with the rod, would that stop oil from getting to the rocker arms? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

IP: 184.21.143.147 Posted on November 6, 2015 at 07:17:01 AM by Larry Harsin

The oil for the rocker arms comes from the rear main bearing. It may be that the bearing shell that you installed on the rear does not have an oil hole. If this is the case, put the half with no holes in the cap and the half with the holes should go in the top half. Larry

1850 charging

IP: 72.94.168.44 Posted on November 5, 2015 at 05:18:44 AM by Steve Moyer

Volt meter on 1850 is pegged to + side measured 14.4 volts at battery at high rpm. Is that too much ? Should I adjust regulator down ?

IP: 184.21.143.147 Posted on November 5, 2015 at 08:24:55 AM by Larry Harsin

I don't think that is too much. You don't have to adjust the regulator. Larry

Oliver 66 wheel bearing

IP: 70.210.137.103 Posted on November 1, 2015 at 10:33:06 PM by Paul

I just bought a 66 wf. One of the front hubs is off and missing bearings so I took the other side off to get bearing numbers. I got the new bearings but they didn't fit. Come to find out the casting with bearings is L1176 while the other one is 102718A. Do you know the bearings that I need or do I need a different hub. I believe my tractor is a 1949. Thank you, Paul

I have a pair off of a 77 with a K prefix. It is a 6 bolt pressed wheel.

I don't think that will fit on that. The K has bigger bearings than the L. Larry

1755 Oliver Diesel

IP: 184.94.234.11 Posted on November 1, 2015 at 10:16:39 PM by Thomas Cunningham

I am working on installing a WL-40 loader (which has a grapple) on a 1755 Oliver and wanted to put a 3-spool valve on it...so I can leave my other remotes open. I was wondering how to feed the spool with oil and do I have to have a closed center spool, or will and open center work.
