1750 trans lube line

Posted by Brian on October 29, 2016, 6:31 pm 107.77.111.85

I recently bought a 1750 diesel. It looks to have had a hard life. But was cheap. While checking it over I noticed the lube line at front of trans ,by the coupler, has a hole in it. There is no oil coming out of it. I pulled the filter off and started the engine, oil came out. I'd guess there's a broken line. Any ideas. Thanks

Re: 1750 trans lube line Posted by Larry Harsin on October 31, 2016, 9:22 am, in reply to "1750 trans lube line"

I'm not sure how much pressure is supposed to be in the line. But, I would definitely repair or replace it. I think it is probably gravity flow oil going down into that bevel pinion shaft. If you have oil pressure for the lube filter, that's great. I think then you can assume you are o.k. (Repair or replace) Larry

1600 diesel

Posted by Chris Lowder on October 25, 2016, 8:30 pm 67.140.37.171

Hello, I'm new to this website but it looks very informative. I've got a couple questions on my 1600 Oliver diesel if you don't mind please: How difficult is it to change the front seal? Do you have to take anything with the injection pump off or mess with the timing, or basically just the pulley and front cover? Also, I think I may have 1 or 2 exhaust valves sticking a little. Anything you can suggest trying before rebuilding head? When I changed my fuel filter's, the 1 on the right side was pretty filthy with a lot of junk in it. The other was pretty good looking. I'm thinking I may have some of the junk in my injection pump because when I first rev throttle, it's still slow to respond but after that, it goes up and down very responsive. Can I take the pump off and clean it out without doing a rebuild? Thanks again for the info. This was one of my grandpaw's tractors that I finally got back and fixing to repaint it but need to address a few things first! Chris

Re: 1600 diesel Posted by Larry Harsin on October 26, 2016, 8:36 am, in reply to "1600 diesel" 184.21.143.147

To renew the front seal on the crankshaft, if it is the spring-loaded cork style, the cast iron timing cover will have to be removed. If it is a lip type seal, you won't have to remove the cover. I'm pretty sure that that tractor was built with the spring-loaded cork and you will have to remove the injection pump to replace that seal. I recommend that you take the pump to your pump shop and have it cleaned and repaired while you have it off. You will also have to remove the water pump before you take the front cover off. Before removing the injection pump, you should remove the little timing cover that is held on by 2 screws on the side of the pump and turn the engine by hand until the 2 timing marks align. Then, you can remove the pump and install it without a problem. Do not turn the engine while the pump is removed! You will have to unbolt the pump drive gear from the pump drive hub with the cap screws that are wired. You will have to remove the gear and the pump drive shaft by pulling it forward. If you are not losing much oil and not leaking badly, I would leave it alone. Larry

Thanks for the great info Larry! Is there anything u can suggest for the sticking exhaust valves other than head job?

Re: 1600 diesel Posted by Larry Harsin on October 27, 2016, 8:31 am, in reply to "Re: 1600 diesel" 184.21.143.147

Try to get more oil onto the valve stems. I have put shims under the rocker arms to help tip them so that oil runs over to the valves better. I sometimes chisel a little channel on top of the rocker arms to help the oil get over there better. Larry

Oliver Super 55 Question

Posted by Jim Bradley on October 23, 2016, 8:38 pm 68.234.107.165 My old Super 55 has a problem resulting from fluid in the rear tires. The rims are the kind with six loops. The loops are rusted beyond repair and I have a new set of them. BUT the part of the wheel that these loops bolt to is also shot on several loops. My question is what is the name of this part (the part that bolts to the rim and fits onto the axle)? And where would I find replacements? Jim

Re: Oliver Super 55 Question Posted by Larry Harsin on October 24, 2016, 8:39 am, in reply to "Oliver Super 55 Question" 184.21.143.147

It is called the wheel or the wheel disk. Call Kent Gordon in Palestine, TX. 903-729-8349. He will probably have a replacement for you. Larry

Hi Larry I have a oliver 1555 and recently had the injection pump overhauled I got it primed but it will not fire it's almost like the pump is out of time. What could it be and how do you time that pump?

Re: Oliver 1555 Posted by Larry Harsin on October 18, 2016, 8:44 am, in reply to "Oliver 1555" 184.21.143.147

Make sure that your number 1 cylinder is on Top Dead Center compression. Then, line up the numbers on your pump and it will run. If when you removed the pump, you had those marks lined, and didn't move the engine after you had the pump off, it should be correct. Larry

Re: Oliver 1555 Posted by Aaron on October 18, 2016, 9:03 am, in reply to "Re: Oliver 1555" 70.195.83.159

What numbers on the pump are you referring to?

Re: Oliver 1555 Posted by Larry Harsin on October 22, 2016, 8:12 am, in reply to "Re: Oliver 1555" 184.21.143.147

I wasn't referring to numbers on the pump, I was talking about the engine cylinders. Number 1 is closest to the radiator. When number 1 is on TDC compression, both the rocker arms will be loose. Have the flywheel on the TDC mark, then line up the 2 lines on the pump and bolt the gear and it should run. Larry

Super 77 Thermostat

I am replacing the thermostat on a super 77 gas and the only replacement I can find is to long. the one I am taking out is a short unit with a rubber seal around the top end of it. Now some web sites call their thermostat a long neck, so is there a short neck? is there any way to attach photos of the unit?

1650 Power Steering Issue

Posted by Ted on October 16, 2016, 11:53 pm 24.165.216.36

I just bought a 1965 1650 Gas, and the steering wheel spins freely with engine stopped, and the front wheels do not turn. I'm guessing the hydra motor is worn out? Ted

Re: 1650 Power Steering Issue Posted by Larry Harsin on October 18, 2016, 8:38 am, in reply to "1650 Power Steering Issue" 184.21.143.147

It may be that the splines are worn away where the steering column hooks onto the hydra motor. You may be able to get it operational again. Otherwise you will have to replace the assembly. I think I have that part if you need it. Either call me 712-362-2966 or email me. harsinoliver@ilechsi.com Larry

OLIVER 550 Transmission oil

Posted by Rev. Byron McElroy on October 13, 2016, 2:33 pm 50.163.228.80

I have a 1965 550 tractor and I want to drain the transmission and refill with fresh fluid. The onwers manual say to use 10w-30 oil with 102 082-A oil additive. The manual further states that the additive is only available from an Oliver dealer. Since there are no longer any Oliver dealers, where might I find such additive. Or can I use a transmission gear oil?

White American 80 lift lever stuck

This tractor was made by White, but it looks like a lot of Oliver. I was sowing wheat. Next morning the three point lift would not work. The control lever is stuck. I changed hydro fluids a month ago. Got out a pressure gauge and I'm good. Steering works as does the loader. Any suggestions? The lift is in the down position.

Super 77 gas engine oil flow

Posted by Don on October 11, 2016, 11:46 am 65.127.84.74

Does engine oil filter, filter 100% of the oil flow to the engine? I installed a new filler and oil gauge, and I don't see any oil pressure ( I will be putting a gauge in the block to check), but when I pull the filter back off it is dry. Cranking the engine with the filter OFF I see oil coming out the center pipe that goes up into the filter. When I pull the plug our of the side of the block below the generator there is oil in the galley.

Re: Super 77 gas engine oil flow Posted by Larry Harsin on October 14, 2016, 7:24 am, in reply to "Super 77 gas engine oil flow" 184.21.143.147

No. It is a by-pass filter. It is supposed to have only 18 lbs. psi. Larry

Tighten from the center out in 10 lb. increments. I just go to 100 ft. lbs. Also, I retorque the bolts after the engine has been warmed up and cooled down again. You need to get a Shop Manual from the Museum in Charles City. 642-228-1099. Larry

Oliver 1650 Transmission Input Shaft

Posted by Neil Paulsen on October 10, 2016, 10:26 am 66.37.244.94

Recently the splines stripped off of the input shaft of the transmission of my gas 1650. I purchased the new input shaft, and gear for that shaft. I also bought the gear that mates to it on the rear of the motor and is held together by the chain. Due to limited resources the motor was pulled to access the shaft instead of splitting the tractor. Both the hydraulic assembly and motor were pulled, and the new input shaft and gears were installed. The motor and hydraulic assembly were put back in place and bolted down. After the tractor was completely put back together and prior to starting the tractor, I ran the shifter through the gear patterns. The shifter seemed to function correctly and be moved fully into each gear. The tractor was then started and allowed to warm up some. While it warmed up, the shifter was still in the neutral position. After it had been allowed to warm up, I slowly started to release the clutch pedal. As the clutch pedal was being released, the motor started to pull down as if it was in gear, and the farther the pedal the was released, the more the motor pulled until it killed. I checked the shifter, and it was still in neutral, but now I couldn't get it into any of the gears in the low side or the high side. The tractor was started again, but with the same results. The PTO shaft does turn while the tractor is running and it can be turned by hand when the tractor is not running. The input shaft appears that it wants to turn when the clutch pedal is being released, but something seems to be binding it up as soon as I see it start to turn. The hydraulic assembly was removed a second time, and the gentleman that I had helping me with it, thought that it was the shift forks. He reposition those and looked everything over one more time. The hydraulic assembly was re-attached, and I tried it again. But I got the same results. Do you have any suggestions on what should be tried next?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your attention in this matter. Thanks, Neil Paulsen

Re: Posted by Larry Harsin on October 14, 2016, 7:19 am, in reply to "Oliver 1650 Transmission Input Shaft" 184.21.143.147

Probably one of those input gears seized up to the shaft again. I would say, if you had the bearings set up too tight on that shaft or the oiler is not bringing enough oil up to that cluster on the input shaft. Larry

hydraulic ports

I have a 1600(gas)and am adding a loader to it and was told that I could plumb into to hydraulics under the seat on the left side to access a live line. Is that try if so which plugs would I plumb into I can send pics of mine if you would like. Thanks in advance I have heard from friends this was the place to go for my Oliver questions. I love my 1600 its the best money I have spent easy to work and rock solid mechanics hydraulics are new for me as other units are old IH or junk deere. Thanks again Jim

Re: hydraulic ports Posted by Larry Harsin on October 10, 2016, 8:21 am, in reply to "hydraulic ports" 184.21.143.147

If your 1600 has the filter on the left side of the hydraulic, you will have to remove a pipe plug on the front of the hydraulic system by the power steering flow divider. You may have to unbolt the flow divider to access this half inch pipe plug. After you remove the pipe plug, look in the hole and it should have a threaded passage in there. It will be about 2-3 inches deep. It should be a 3/8 in. pipe thread, so that you can put a socket head pipe plug in there. Then, attach a hose to go to the loader valve. Then, the return will go to a 1/2 in. pipe plug on the left side of the unit in the area directly behind where you installed the plug in the passage. That should make it work. Larry

1365 white

Posted by Tom Hawkins on October 8, 2016, 4:03 pm 198.223.242.87

I'm having issues with my 1365 white tractor. it started after I finished bushhogging one day. The tractor is now starting very odd. When you try to start it the engine starts out slow as your cranking it and picks up speed until it starts. after starting it seems to chug at low rpm but will line out if you raise the fuel up. but even when it lines out it has low power. I've removed and disassembled and cleaned the air filtering system as well as drained the fuel tank to look for obstructions. Replaced the fuel filters and reprimed the fuel system. Fuel system and lines are clean. Still having same issue. Any guess As to what is going on or what i should do next?

What is the capacity and correct hydraulic fluid to use. It is a newer hydraulic system with the levers on top of the reservoir. The tractor did not have hydraulics from new and my father had them installed from a salvage tractor. Could that be from the super series or the 770 series?

Hey Larry it's been a while, you helped me out with the clutch on my 1949 Oliver 77 a while back and now my return spring is broken. If I run it with it broken will it hurt the T.O. Bearing sleeve? I need to replace this spring but I haven't had the time, busy with 250 acres of hay 3rd cut in upstate NY, this old girl is my baby and I don't want to ruin the bearing/ pressure plate over a stupid spring. Do u have replacements? Right now she's a back up moving kicker wagons and on super light duty, it would be a huge help if you had one or could point me in the right direction, ps the hydraulics still work phenomenal since you rebuilt my pump, Chris

1655 hydraulics

Posted by Travis on October 2, 2016, 6:57 pm 75.100.14.153

Larry, I have a 1655 Diesel that I started today and hooked up to my loader. After lifting the loader about 3 feet it quit lifting. I checked the fluid and found it low. I added about one gallon of oil. After starting the tractor it still did not operate. I put the tractor in gear, backed up about 10 feet and then the steering and loader all started working. I drove it another couple hundred feet and just like that the steering and loader quit working again. It trys to steer and lift the loader, but as soon as it calls for very much power it stops lifting/steering. The steering will steer hard if I am moving, but not at all if I am sitting still. Also, when I last used the tractor about 30 days ago I had no problems with either the steering or the hydraulics. Thanks in advance for your any help.
