Oliver 88 Row Crop Diesel

Posted by Luke on October 30, 2018, 10:08 pm

Hi, my Oliver 88 Diesel’s crankshaft pulley seems sloppy. It look like “rivets” are loose. Not sure if there should be some movement but seems loose. Can you help me find a replacement pulley?

Is this a two piece pulley? The kind that has three small bolts that you can loosen to adjust belt tension. The book I looked in said it is. But the number you showed me didn't show up. On any pulley there should not be any looseness. Maybe if you took it off the rivets could be replaced with bolts making sure it runs "true" or you will shorten belt life and it may vibrate. You will need to remove the grill and radiator to get to it and a puller of some kid may be needed. If you need a used one, try this guy. Dennis Matzke 608 325 2941. He is near Monroe, Wis

Same as I told John. Find a good local diesel shop and give them the #'s. Sometimes it's nice to be able to complain locally if the job gets troublesome.

1655 Alternator

Posted by Craig on October 25, 2018, 8:28 am

I just picked up a 1655 diesel and had an odor when first running and after looking around found a connection point on the alternator that was getting red hot. Is this likely a voltage regulator issue or a problem with the alternator itself?

Re: 1655 Alternator

Posted by Arnie on October 25, 2018, 9:57 am, in reply to "1655 Alternator"

A bad connection that develops "high" resistance can cause what you described. So can other things. I suggest that you take the alternator and regulator to a good automotive electrical shop and have them checked. Yours may have an internal regulator. If not you will see it bolted to the side of the block near the alternator. Mark the wiring connections so they can be put back where they belong. There may be problems with the tractor or someone may have had it a part and has the wires installed wrong. We had one that was updated from the early external reg to the later internal reg. It was done wrong and caused lots of troubles. Also make certain the battery is install with negative ground. Good luck..Arnie

1967 1550 Oliver diesel

My Oliver started to skip on one cylinder did this for about one month I checked valves filters but it kept skipping went out one morning and it was running perfect now 3 months later it's skipping again do not know what to do

Re: 1967 1550 Oliver diesel

Sounds like an intermittently sticking valve. Remove the valve cover, start the engine and watch for a valve not traveling up and down as far as the others. Possibly a sticking injector or a pump problem. Try changing the oil and filter. Use a good oil made for diesel use. If this is a high hour engine it may need head rebuilding. As far as additives I use ATF. A quart per tank of fuel but there are other additives that will do the same job. ATF is a high detergent oil with superior lubricating and cleaning properties. Arnie

Re: 1967 1550 Oliver diesel

The tractor has a serial # located on a plate riveted to the lower dash just ahead of your feet. The block does not have serial # only a casting #. I found the original part # was 160918A and it was replaced by 160918AS. Hope this helps.

My engine has160918a on it so what kind of injectors do I order or what engine do I have. And where can I find parts for it .

Getting them from Agco may get pricey and they won't be there when things go wrong and you have ?'s. I always use a local shop that specializes in rebuilding pumps and injectors. We have two good shops here in the Dubuque, Ia area. They will know exactly what you need. Check with your local farm tractor dealer. They will recommend a shop. Good luck.

Oliver Super 88

Posted by Sam Harris on October 22, 2018, 9:21 pm

I want to move this old tractor, but the rims are rusted out and the tires are flat - the tubes are ripped from the rusted rims. How much does this tractor weigh and will it roll with flat tires onto a flatbed? Does not run because of a worn leaking gasket in the fuel pump.

If you have a good winch on the truck you can load it. Having air in the front tires will make steering easier.

Super 66 Hydraulics

Posted by Mike Smith on October 20, 2018, 6:55 pm

I just bought a supper 66 that has a mechanical lift.
Will a regular 66 complete hydraulic lift pump and hydra electric bolt in place of this lift on the Super 66 ? I have this complete hydraulic unit from another 66 I have.
I would like to add the hydraulics to the super 66.
Thanks for any help.

Re: Super 66 Hydraulics

Posted by Larry K on October 21, 2018, 3:08 pm, in reply to "Super 66 Hydraulics"

You need to replace the transmission drive shaft with a short one. As long as the splines on the shaft is good, a machine shop can cut it with a lathe.

Re: Super 66 Hydraulics

Posted by Mike Smith on October 22, 2018, 9:38 am, in reply to "Re: Super 66 Hydraulics"

Just to clarify that would be the shaft from the flywheel hub to the coupler ?

Re: Super 66 Hydraulics

Posted by Larry K on October 22, 2018, 11:38 am, in reply to "Re: Super 66 Hydraulics"

No, that would be too easy. It is the shaft from the coupler into the transmission.. if you have a belt pulley you need to remove that gear box to remove the drive shaft. The gear that powers the mechanical lift is on this drive shaft.

1755 vibration when in over or direct

Posted by Eric Wallis on October 19, 2018, 1:39 pm

I can't figure out what is causing the vibration and shudder when running at speed only when in either over or direct on the hydraul shift. I have had the coupler sprockets and chain replaced, reshimmed motor and over/under, replaced trans input shaft. These helped but did not eliminate this shudder which happens while cutting hay with a Kubota disc m/c since that is mostly what I use this tractor for now. I would like to get this to my mechanic friend soon to get this taken care of but he doesn't know what else to do next without replacing all kinds of stuff that likely doesn't need replacing. Thanks ahead for your help!

Re: 1755 vibration when in over or direct

Posted by Arnie on October 20, 2018, 6:55 am, in reply to "1755 vibration when in over or direct"

If I read your post correctly it happens mostly when you use the PTO.(under load)Pull the PTO long shaft, roll it across a nice flat floor and check to see if it is straight. Also check the splines on the forward end where it slides into the drive hub. If there is a lot of wear on the splines there may also be wear in the drive hub which is bolted to the flywheel. To replace that you must pull the engine, separate it from the over/under, and take off the clutch. Continued shaking could possibly do damage to the hydraulic pump. A long time ago I had a 1550 gas come in that had a shake when up to speed. I took a pry bar and at the front of the engine checked "end play" on the crank. Nearly 3/8 of an inch. And one with a bent crank shaft. Also had one with a loose flywheel. Take off the starter and look thru the hole. Do you have anything extra running off the engine? Possibly a front mounted pump? Good luck. I would like to know what you find.. Arnie

Lo there Eric! Add this to what Arnie mentioned. Is the vibration only with the mower? If it is you might want to check its drive line also. Vibrations can travel through driveshafts, etc. Hook the tractor up to something else that requires similar power.

Here is a link to the 550 S/N's with year produced. The 518 number after the dash is the transmission code. The S/N is the nunmbers before the -518.

Oliver 1365 Timing after injection pump failure

Posted by Kenneth Yow on October 2, 2018, 8:49 pm

My 1972 1365 injection pump shaft/head seized. We tried starting for a while before we opened the pump cover. Had the pump rebuilt, installed by lining up marks made when removing old pump.

We know the starter was spinning the pump before we discovered why it wouldn't start...so we feel that is why we're out of time.

The engine starts fine, but is sluggish, throttle response is slow.

Would appreciate your thoughts, or referral to someone who could help.

Thank you. Ken Yow 910-783-5833 yowk1@rtmc.net

Re: Oliver 1365 Timing after injection pump failure

Posted by Arnie on October 8, 2018, 7:10 am, in reply to "Oliver 1365 Timing after injection pump failure"

You had the pump rebuilt so it should be OK assuming all the filters are ok, good supply pump, and no restrictions anywhere in the fuel supply system. The injection pump is lubed by the fuel so maybe the head seized because of low incoming fuel or a fuel quality problem. That may be why it runs badly after the pump rebuild. White smoke is lean. Black smoke is

rich. When the engine is at operating temp the smoke should be around light gray. You are describing a timing problem. Try to find a manual.
