Lydia:

In looking for ancestry of Lydia Lambert, wife of La Mech Blanding II, I note that they had a son named Joseph Lambert Blanding, giving possible clue that her father was a Joseph Lambert. The "History of Salem", Vol. 2 (1638-1670), pages 236-238, contains references to a Lambert family, beginning with John 1 Lambert who came to America and "died late in the autumn of 1685". One child is listed, John 2, b. 1629, described as fisherman, mariner & shoreman. He m. Preserved Gaskill. Their fifth child was Samuel 3 Lambert, b. 16 March 1664/65, described as mariner, shoreman & weaver. Samuel m. Margaret Browne before 1690; died in spring of 1732.

Their 6th child was Joseph 4 Lambert, b. 1 August 1702, tailer. He m. Lydia Ropes "before 1738". Nothing more is mentioned in the article on this Joseph. Of course, Salem, MA is quite a ways from Norton, MA where Lydia was born and she & LaMech were married.

Note that John 2 & Preserved (Gaskill) Lambert had another son, Daniel 3, b. 3 Oct 1658, described as a shipwright, who m. (1) Mary Gray, and (2) Elizabeth (Croade) widow of Edmund Bridges. Among Daniel 3 Lambert's children was Daniel 4, described as a shipwright and "of Newport, R.I. in 1734" -- so some of this Lambert family did migrate southerly, and Norton, MA is virtually a suburb of R.I.

Note also Daniel 4 also had a brother Samuel 4, who married a Mary Squire -- and LaMech Blanding II's ancestry goes back to Rachel, daughter of Phillip & Rachel (Ruggles) Squire.

None of this proves anything, of course, but the "History of Salem" does offer some clues for further research, and certainly the marriage of a Joseph Lambert and a Lydia Ropes is interesting, in a generation which could have been Lydia Lambert's grandparents.

Additional information on this interesting person comes from family group sheets compiled by Romaine Fielding, as supplied to William Blandin of Seattle, Wash, in December 1983.

He is described as a RR Engineer, Stationary Engineer, Traveling Sales Representative (power plant and farm equipment). "He married Almeda Bacon after she became pregnant in Aug 1867. Chester's father, William T., a devout Methodist and lay circuit-riding Minister, imposed on his friend Rev. John W. Klepper to perform the necessary wedding. Neither of Chester's parents, Wm. T. nor Icybenda, was present. Witnesses were two friends of Chester, Ed Markham and R. M. Judd. (R.F. Judd, undoubtedly a relative, was Sheriff of Houston County, Minn. at the time of the wedding!). Before the next quarterly meeting of the Caledonia Methodist Circuit on Dec 23, 1867, the Wm. T. Blandin family moved to New Haven, Douglas Twp., Mitchell County, Iowa.

"In 1897 Chester, together with William G. attended the funeral of Chester's mother, Icybenda, in Riceville, following which William T. moved to Minnespolis where he lived until he died in December of 1900. During those years entries for 'Royal A. Blandin' disappeared from the City Directories, and 'William G.' 'returned to life'. After the death of his grandfather, Wm. G. disappears until the 1907 Kansas City, Mo directory (info from 1906) where he is 'Romanzo A. Blondin, clk (clerk) and physician, Auditorium Drug Co.'" - Almeda: Records from Romaine Fielding. She was daughter of Grant and Eliza (Streeter) Bacon. Nancy: Daughter of Archibald and Martha Tate. Records from Romaine Fielding. Sarah: Daughter of Isaiah and Matilda Harlow. Lena: Daughter of J. From family group sheets of Romaine Fielding to William Blandin of Seattle, Wash. Dec. 1983:

William Grant Blandin was also known as "Royal A. Blanding", "Romanzo A. Blondin", and "Romaine Fielding [Sr.]". He was born as above, 22 May 1868, in Mitchell County, Iowa, but there is a "fake birth certificate" showing "Royal A. Blandin" born in Albert Lea, MN, May 22, 1875, which was created by Chester J. [his father] to make him appear to be 7 years younger and the son of Chester's third wife, Emily Harlow, whom he married in 1873 or 1874. See text under Chester John Blandin [his father].

Under name "Romaine Fielding", from 1907-1927, Stage and Screen Actor, Producer, Director and Writer.

Was raised by paternal grandparents until about 18 years of age (1886). 1885 U.S. (?) Census shows Wm. G. still living with grandparents, Wm. T. and Icybenda B. Blandin in Riceville, Ia. (1890 Census destroyed by fire; no record). First reference in 1891 Minnespolis City Director to, "Royal A. Blandin Asst. Propertyman" (theatre). 1895 Minnesota State Census shows, "Royal A. Blandin, student". "Royal A. Blandin" is listed in Minneapolis City Directories rooming or boarding with or near Chester J., his father, in 1891, 1893, 1894, 1895, & 1896. (at no time Wm. G. and Royal A. found listed at the same place or time).

April 8, 1897 obituary for Icybenda B. Blandin (died Mar 30, 1897) in Mitchell Co. Newspaper shows Chester J. and Wm. G. attended Mother's and grandmother's, respectively, funeral in Riceville. No listing in 1897 Minneapolis for Chester J., Royal A. (or Wm. G. Blandin). Commencing in 1898-1900, inclusive, Minneapolis City Directores list Chester J. and William G. Blandin and in 1900 (info actually acquired in 1899) lists also grandfather Wm T. Blandin, then a widower (who died Dec. 27, 1900). Following Wm. T. Blandin's death, the family separated, Chester J. and his third wife, Sarah Emily, moving to Kansas City, Mo. and Wm. G. (alias Royal A.) going up to the Kolondike Region of the Yukon Territory Canada where the gold rush was on... and where he made acquaintance of budding authors like Rex Beach and Jack London. [sheet then shows "See over" but reverse side not sent with package].

Group sheet also shows a child, William Dwight, born 3 April 1923 in St. Louis, Mo. "born out of wedlock to Ruth Sachs (sister of Naomi Sachs Fielding [his third wife]. Birth certificate reads: Wm. Dwight Shepherd, name chosen by father, Romaine Fielding (sr) per phone conversation with Ruth Sachs Noonan 11/70. Wm. Dwight legally adopted by Robt. E. Noonan in 193_."
