500 Hydraulics

2 questions for Oliver 500 Diesel Lift arms won't lift in very cold weather. Could this be due to bad oil? Maybe water in it. the trans fluid looks milky and thick on the stick. Also how can I add external hydraulics to this tractor?

I would change the oil and the filter. I don't have info about external hydraulics on this tractor. You can run an extra pump on the PTO. Larry

Hi Larry, I have an Oliver engine here wondering what it originally was in. Serial number off the block is 163 371 A. Thanks

We have been gone to the National Oliver Winter Get-Togather. It will take me some time to check this out, so I will answer you later. Larry

Crankcase with #163 371 A is the first one used in a 1750 Dsl. It will have the small head bolts and a blocked off cooler casting on side opposite the fuel injection pump. It's an engine they originally planned to use in the 1950T but couldn't hold head gaskets, thus used them in first run 1750.

my 1755 the hyd. is running very hot.It is the later style with the larger brake lines. We have had this tractor for many years & the hyd temp light has never worked. we have always kept the hyd oil & filter serviced & the cooler kept clean. the pump seems to have good pressure but hotter than normal & to the point of seals starting to leak from extreme heat. also the pto will kick out when you hit the left brake? any help or ideas would be great!!!

I think the pressure should be checked on the hydraulic unit. The hydraulic unit and the pressure control valve are leaking. Check them out and stop the leak and it will stop heating. Get your local Service Man to check this out. This could mean replacing the hydraulic pump or the next thing is to check the main relief valve. Larry

I have a gauge & flow meter that I can plug in & check it out. can I just plug into the hyd couplers or do i need to pull a plug like the power beyond port? I don't mind replacing the pump If needed as the tractor has given years of good service & it may just be time to do that. but I just want to make sure i do it right & miss something important.

Yes. Just plug into the hydraulic couplers. Larry
Oliver 70 RC

I bought a replacement water pump for a Oliver 70 RC. The old pump had a oil line from the water pump to the engine. The new pump has a grease fitting where the line would have connected. Do I need to find a fitting, which I haven't been able to find, and hook up the line to the engine again. Thanks

I would check with the supplier of that water pump and see what he recommends. Larry
Oliver 1650 gas stalls when warmed up
IP: 67.142.180.25 Posted on February 20, 2015 at 09:58:20 PM by Ryan
Tractor starts easily and runs fine for a while. Once warmed up it sputters, backfires violently and dies under load or quick throttle. Carburetor is icing up on exterior of venturi, don't know if that's a symptom of a problem or not. Has new coil, new plugs, new wires and rebuilt carb. Also has petronics electronic ignition. Previous compression check has shown cold engine to have lower compression on a few cylinders.

I believe I would check the valve adjustment and get that compression so that it is better. Larry
1950T hydraulics

I'm having problems with one of the hydraulic remotes on my 1968 1950t. Both hoses on that remote are constantly running oil. I have put new O-rings and springs in the top cover and that didn't help. When I first start the tractor I have 65psi at idle, then it goes up to 115 as tractor is run faster. Both hoses have same pressure. Tried adding and removing detent spacers but nothing changed. Where should a person look next, could a cracked top cover be to blame?

The pressure that you are seeing is normal. It is a open center system, thus fluid is always flowing through both (L to R) remote valves to the control valve for the three point hitch. There is resistance to flow in the three point hitch valve to keep the system full. As engine RPM is increased hydraulic pump output increases causing pressure to rise, thus the pressure you are seeing. This pressure is exposed to the remote hoses all the time. If for example it takes 1000 PSI to raise the three point hitch, that pressure is exposed to every component back to the pump.
Super 55 carb adjustment
IP: 68.21.87.4 Posted on February 18, 2015 at 03:06:45 PM by Roy
Have a super 55 gas, have rebuilt carb, adjusted timing, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, electronic ignition. Cannot get it to run quite right without about half choke. Seems lean to me. I've adjusted the needles about anywhere they can be without improvement. Idles OK, not perfect, but ok. Sprayed the intake manifold with ether, couldn't seem to notice any change. What might I be missing here?

You might want to install a vacuum gauge to see if the intake valves are working properly. Larry
White 2105 smokes excessively when cold

I know this is a Oliver site, but I need help with a White 2105. This tractor starts good but smokes (white smoke Water?)terribly until it warms up completely. I have had the head rebuilt and that did not help. I use this tractor for baling hay only. I do not want to break down during hay season. I would like to fix it now if possible.

If it has white smoke until it warms up, I would say it needs a set of rings. I'd also have the injectors checked out. Larry

I don't think they'd lift more than 800-900 lbs. Larry
Transmission question

Hi all. A friend just purchased the contents of an old barn and there were some Oliver parts inside which we are trying to decifer. One is a #638BW Transmission and converter...the oter is a 686BW drive converter parts. These are new old stock and there is an original invoice for them from 1959. Would these be parts someone could use? Thanks all!!

Those sound like a reverse-o-torque field installation bundle, "BA" number. Those parts/ components are in demand as they are nearly impossible to find repairs for now.
Fuel gauge/sending unit 1650 gas
IP: 72.171.192.120 Posted on February 8, 2015 at 06:06:04 PM by Jeff Dier
Hello Larry- The 1650 gas tractor I bought came with a suspect fuel gauge. I tested the gauge and sending unit per your instructions in a previous post which indicated a bad sending unit. Replaced the sending unit. The new sending unit has a seperate connection for a ground. The old unit had only the single wire from the gauge. I improvised a ground and connected it to the frame. Now the gauge reads full all the time and does not move. It goes to empty when the engine is shut off and when the wire from the gauge is disconnected. The gauge does not come off empty when the switch is on, only when the engine is running. Any suggestions? Thanks

You may have assembled the gauge wrong. Recheck the instructions that came with the sending unit. Larry

I'm needing some help in identifying a tractor. Marked with the oliver 550 decals but the serial number search has been questionable. Tag is tough to read but I think i've made out a spec# 45-0037 and ser.#75653 519 cant tell if a number is missing between the 3 and 5.Any input?

Your serial number is 75 653. The 519 has to do with gearing etc. that was put into your tractor. I do not know the codes for this. This tractor was built in 1959. You could call the Floyd Co. Museum in Charles City and get a copy of the Build Card that moved down the the line with the tractor. It will tell you several things about your tractor, including the first dealer that sold it. Not sure, but I think it may cost $20 for a copy. 641-228-1099. Larry
