77 diesel clutch noise

Posted by Brian Goll on February 1, 2017, 7:43 am 70.39.6.221

Larry I have a 1953 77 diesel that is making some serious noise in the clutch area. With the clutch let out and tractor moving, it is fine. Push the clutch down and it is shuddering and shaking, also gears grind badly trying to shift-as if the clutch is not releasing. Tried adjusting clutch and no change no matter which way I adjust it.This tractor has always had a little of this but has gotten steadily worse to the point I had to park it.

You are going to have to take it apart. You will have to replace trouble making parts. It might be in the pilot bearing. Otherwise it will be in the throw-out bearing. If you need more assistance, call me. 712-362-2966. Larry

This one has a cast iron valve cover and the newer style front one piece cast lower pulley. Could it have been updated or is it possible it has had an engine change? Thanks Arnie

12 V Alternator for Oliver 77

Oliver 1650 volts overcharge, running poorly

Posted by Mike on February 2, 2017, 10:25 pm 184.53.50.14

I've had points problems before, mainly was a bad ground connection on my Holley distributor. After I fixed that it ran great for awhile until one morning it was running rough again. Weak spark. While messing with it I tightened the fan belt as it squalled a bit at higher rpms. So, I get my meter out as I see the ameter is pegged while running. I have 8volts with the key in run position at the Coil. When I start it and get it going the voltage is over 16 volts at the coil and over 18 volts at the battery at 2000 rpm. I'm thinking I've smoked some points and or condenser due to the overcharging condition. It runs worse under a load with more rpms. I've ordered the petronix electronic setup for my distributor. And I'm debating on wether to replace the external regulator or just upgrade to a newer delco with internal regulator. Am I on the right track with this problem? Thanks Mike

I would probably favor the newer Delco with the internal regulator. Larry

Thanks Larry Am I on the right track thinking that the overcharging has caused my ignition/points problem? It got worse after I tightened the fan belt, to where it wasn't slipping. So it was getting a massive 18 volt charge

running log splitter off tractor hydraulics

Posted by Al on February 3, 2017, 8:58 am 64.184.49.168

Have 1800 C gas tractor. Inherited wood splitter runs off tractor hydraulics have to tie down the lever to keep hydraulics on while using wood splitter. Question: Will this harm the hydraulics system on tractor? Question #2: Thought about setting up a power beyond remote to operate log splitter but the manual I have the diagrams do not look the same as my tractor can not figure out how to set the system up.

It is o.k. to do it the way you are doing it. Its a real possibility that your tractor is different than the manual. So, doing it the way you are doing it is fine. Larry

Oliver 1250 diesel strange hydraulic oil leak

Posted by Mike Atnip on February 7, 2017, 9:43 pm 70.208.235.159

I picked up an Oliver 1250 Diesel at a local auction. Runs great and everything was working (after doing some rewiring!). However, it has developed a rather strange oil leak in the hydraulic system. First it started overflowing at a fill pipe that goes under the seat. The pipe has a cap on it, with a small hole drilled in the cap. Not sure if that is original or not. Anyways, the oil that leaks out is dark, like engine oil. My son (just starting into mechanical work) thinks it is sucking engine oil from the hydraulic pump (for the remotes) that is on the right front of the engine. I have my doubts. Anyways, sometimes it leaks, then it doesn't for a while. He put electrical tape over the hole in the cap, and now it oozes oil out around the 3-point arms. Am hoping to sell the tractor when warmer weather hits. We don't need it, I just picked it up reasonable at the auction. It wouldn't start, but we found it just needed 24 volts and they were trying to get it going with 12 volts at the auction. :-) But with this funny oil leak, I wonder how many people will be interested in buying it, so would like to figure it out.

Thanks. It was sold at an estate auction. It worked fine for a few months, and then developed this leak. I'll have to try to dig into it, or offer it for a reduced amount, as is.

Oliver 550 PTO problems

Posted by Dennis on February 8, 2017, 8:54 pm 24.149.81.170

I bought this tractor last year and have been working on the pto since then. When I went to adjust the PTO via the plate under the tractor all the gears fell out in multiple pieces. I broke the tractor in two and replaced everything but as I'm putting it back together and trying to check that everything is correct I notice when I pull the leaver forward to disengage the PTO the gears are coming out of the housing. It seems there should be something holding the gears in the housing and only allowing the spider to move but there was nothing there when I tore the tractor down and think that might have been the original problem. Could you please tell me what should hold that in and where it is located?

1967 oliver 550 power steering leak

Posted by Riley on February 10, 2017, 11:29 am 50.200.138.118

Hello, I recently bought a 1967 Oliver 550 Gas that runs great, the only issue i've noticed is it seems to be leaking fluid from directly under the steering wheel. I have replaced the top shaft bearing but it seems to have done nothing. I was not sure if I used the wrong part or where to look next. Thanks for the help, -Riley

It sounds like instead of the bearing, you need to be replacing the top seal. Larry

Hi Larry, Thanks for the quick response, I did manage to get a felt seal and a cone that fit well under the steering wheel however it didn't do anything to stop the leak. I cannot seem to pinpoint the right type of seal unless there something else I am missing? Thanks again

Freshly restored 770 hydraulic reservoir get hot immediately upon start up. so hot it will burn the oil. We had a loader on it before we restored it, then took loader off, i am at a loss for what is going on. If you could point me in the right direction that would be apprciated.

It sounds to me like your Power Beyond circuit is in play. You have to do one of two things: 1. Reconnect the hose that takes the oil around to th hydraulic filter. )r 2. Remove the 3/8" pipe plug that is in the oil passage in the hydraulic unit base plate. Larry

Missing Oliver Super 55 Serial #

Posted by BARRY J RINGS SR. on February 16, 2017, 9:28 am 70.209.135.222

How would I go about replacing the missing serial number plate on my 55? The cover the plate was attached to below the instrument panel is missing.

Also, the tractor has a knocking noise and is blowing smoke from the vent tube coming from the engine.

Thanks, Barry Re: Missing Oliver Super 55 Serial #

Posted by Larry Harsin on February 17, 2017, 8:29 am, in reply to "Missing Oliver Super 55 Serial #" 99.197.236.232

Do you know the original serial number? Lyle Dumont has Serial Number tags. Email: Oliver@lisco.com Phone: 641-622-2592. Also, D & D has them. 641-423-9487. If your tractor is knocking and blowing smoke like you say, you better start taking it apart and see what is causing this. Larry

There is an engine serial number on the engine block. That might be helpful. The date that that engine was built is stamped on the cylinder head near the thermostat housing. If you know the engine serial number and the year the tractor was built, you can call Charles City and maybe they can tell you what tractor had that engine i n it. 641-228-1099. Larry

1650 open cab with water contamination in the transmission oil.

Posted by Erik on February 17, 2017, 10:22 am 205.221.127.99

Hi Larry. I went to change the tranmission filter yesterday and noticed that the fluide was contaminated. We were only able to remove the rear drain plug and left It to drain. It sets out quite often as we use it to run augers. I have 2 questions. Do we need to try harder to remove the inset plug too to make sure we have all the old fluid out? I read somewhere that there is a screen inside the tranny that needs cleaned sometimes. How do I acess it if is a concern. Thank you.

The answers to these questions are covered in your Operator's Manual. You should have one, it will tell you a lot about your tractor. You can get one from the Floyd Co. Museum in Charles City. 641-228-1099. There is another drain plug to get all of the oil out of the transmission. It is located near the plug that you removed near the pump screen. Larry

Super 77 brake housing shims and torque

When replacing the disc brakes on a super 77 the brake housing five nuts were all loose. Two questions:

1. what is the torque for the housing nuts

2. what would be the shimming load on the bearings, pre-load or end play

i rebuilt engine in tractor. ran engine on floor, ran good but had high oil pressure[100 psi] did not run long thought it was high because of everything new. installed engine and then ran to break in motor. did not run long and it started blowing foamy water out of radiator, oil pressure was still at 90psi. shut down pulled dip stick oil level low and checked water it had oil droplets in it. i had checked oil pump and such. releive valve worked free by hand and spring looked good. what could be wrong? the cat manuel shows that it supposed to open at 70 psi.
