Oliver 1800 C model timing
IP: 70.195.66.213 Posted on January 28, 2016 at 03:37:39 PM by Eric Lambdin
I am trying to time our Oliver 1800 C gas tractor. I have found the top dead center TDC line, and the manual says to set my timing light on the 24 degree mark. Is there an additional mark? Or am I supposed to set the timing light on the TDC line? Also, which cylinder is the number 1 cylinder?

104028ASA 1 Flywheel With Ring Gear (7K-1005) And Bushing (106211-A) (Does Not Include 106216-A Timing Mark Tape) (S/N 90525 -) From the AGCO parts listings. I'm guessing the 106216-A tape is missing, was similar to a decal. It had a mark to line up with the TDC and the degrees were on the tape it self. If someone has a "C" with the tape still on they could measure and give an approx. inches from the TDC mark.

Set the thing around top dead center with the engine idling slowly and a timing light. Then when you speed up the idle, the distributor should advance 20¼ at full throttle. Sorry for the slowness in answering, we have been gone for 3 weeks. Larry

880 oliver gas - Carb leaking fuel

Larry, unable to start 880 gas oliver. Carb was leaking fuel, tried two carb kits and installed rebuilt carb, but no luck. Carb leaks fuel from bottom main plug and jet. Assumed float problems but new carb should have fixed. thanks

I would just shut the gas off at the fuel strainer when I not using the tractor. Today's gas just doesn't act the same on these old tractors. Larry

Is it normal for a Hydra Power to "free wheel" in low range? The tractor is an 1850 gas.

Yes, it is normal. It spooked me when I first discovered it on my 1650, but it is normal. I just had mine rebuilt and the guy explained to me how it works. It's a pretty cool idea.

It helps if you shut off the gas each time you are finished with the tractor. The gas they sell these days just doesn't work as well in these old tractors. Another thing that would help a lot is to put a cup of diesel fuel in every tankful of gas.. Larry
1955 Oliver super 77 diesel
IP: 162.211.184.6 Posted on January 22, 2016 at 07:50:50 PM by Daniel Ryan
I have a 1955 Super 77 diesel that we recently have done a load of work to. Engine was somewhat overhauled with new rings and honed sleeves 3 1/2 std bores. Head was rebuilt and injectors along with injection pump which has a new plunger now. Nice clean fuel system, Engine will start and run rough spitting fuel through at least 3 exhaust ports and will not light up if cold weather (25 degrees) Did a compression test today and average 250 to 275 per cylinder. According to the shop manual is this too low? Or should this baby run ok with those readings? Been working on these diesels for 20 years but I surely do not know everything. Thoughts on where to get a good piston and sleeve set 3 and 5/8 bore or should I stick with 3 1/2 ? Daniel

The Museum is a great source of information about your tractor! Beginning with the 50 series tractors, they have what they call "Build Cards" on every tractor. The "Build Card" is one of the old computer cards that they punched the square holes in. When these tractors were built, a computer rolled down the assembly line with them. When something was put into the tractor, it was punched into the computer. The Museum found these cards a few years ago, in the paperwork that Oliver had presented to the local Historical Society. The people at the museum have bee working on these "Build Cards" and have figured out a lot of the "codes" to read them, but not all of them. If you call the Floyd County Museum, 641-228-1099, and give them your tractor's serial number, they can tell you many things about your tractor, even who was the first dealership to sell it. For a fee, they will send you a copy of your card. Another thing that every tractor owner should have, is an Operator's Manual for that tractor. The Operator's Manual has lots of info about your tractor and how to care for it and repair some things. You can get these Operator's Manuals from the Museum also. They have Operator's manuals, Parts Manuals and Shop (repair) Manuals for each tractor. Of course, there is a fee for these manuals. Some of the Shop Manuals seem high, but some of them cover more than one model of tractor. Sandra Harsin

Timing 880 diesel
IP: 67.7.210.113 Posted on January 19, 2016 at 12:43:00 PM by Dale
We have a 880 diesel in our shop. And we have tried to time the injector pump. We have followed the book, But when we time it it smokes even after adjust it in the slots. But we have noticed the when we take the side cover off the pump and that is very close where it needs to be, The timing marks thru the pipe plug on top of the timing gears is not even close. Is the pump out of time in it self? Thanks for any light you can shed on this for us! Dale @ Hongisto Implement. 218-879-3397

My steering doesn't work very well it will turn one way just fine and the other hard or will be fine and then you can't hardly turn it either direction I have lost all control and it put me in the ditch going down the road. It bypasses pretty fast to you have to keep turning the wheel to keep straight any idea if that would be the steering wheel pump or the one under the radiator.

The serial number you give, 20 856, is listed as a 1955 Oliver Super 66. If, as Harry D. suggests, you have missed the first number, that is a 4, it could be a 1949 Oliver 66. Larry

1650 steering

Hi Larry. I was using the 1650 when I heard a soft pop noise and then the steering stopped. The steering wheel turns easily from lock to lock, but doesn't turn the wheels. I can turn the front wheels by hand easily as well, of course once the weight is off of them. Is the problem in the steering motor that's under the radiator? I have a loader on this tractor too. I don't know if that makes a difference to you or not but I am careful with it because of the 1650 lighter front axle. I realize it could be a number of things, but thank you in advance.

Make sure that the Pitman shaft, below the steering unit on the radiator, is tight to the pitman arm. You may have a problem at this point. Larry

When I pull the throttle down and the choke is all the way in it hesitates even after it is warmed up. Do you think the carburetor has dirt in it or needs a rebuild? Thank you for your time and help. Not necessarily. I would try to adjust the load needle by turning it out half to 3/4 turn and see if that helps. Make sure that you are getting good fuel flow to the carb. Larry

Diesel fuel coming out of exhust manifold

This is a problem we call "wet-stacking". Most of the time it will clear up if the engine is put to work for a long enough period to get the engine warmed up thoroughly. If it doesn't clear up, then you can consider the things you mention. These engines are made to work, not just setting around. They need to be used occasionally. Larry

Re(1): clutch
IP: 184.21.143.147 Posted on January 4, 2016 at 08:21:18 AM by Larry Harsin
To replace the clutch an 88, remove the fuel tank, unbolt the dash from the frame and fold it up over the engine. Remove the long PTO drive shaft that goes up to the engine. If your tractor has a belt pulley, remove the pulley drive from the transmission frame. Then you will be able to have access to the clutch. If you have anymore questions, call me 712-362-2966. Larry
hydraulics 770
IP: 66.211.233.144 Posted on January 3, 2016 at 02:06:03 PM by Ray Gourley
I have a late model 770 with a loader .When I purchased the tractor the loader was plumbed into the factory ports and controlled with the levers under the steering wheel. several years ago with your help, I added a remote valve and plumbed into the power beyond port. Everything worked well for a while then I started getting oil overflowing the fill cap when I would lower the high lift or when I would shut off the engine. I decided to inspect the pump, all parts seemed good except the ends of the gears had some wear. All tolerances were good and surfaces were smooth. I put everything back together and now the loader will lift normal for about half way up then slows and barely lifts at all. I decided to check pressures and drain system and look at the pressure relief valve. I have 1100 psi, But when I went to drain system through one of the remote couplers it seemed to take a long time to drain and the oil was coming out in spurts and very foamy. before disassembly of the pump everything worked just oil over flowed. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated Ray
