Oliver 1850 Diesel Running hot

IP: 216.249.64.187 Posted on June 29, 2014 at 01:26:51 PM by Ron Hardesty

I have a 1965 oliver 1850 Diesel. In the spring of 2013 I had a new Water Pump and thermostat put on. i also put on a new radiator cap. I also had the injector pump rebuilt. That summer the trasctor would run up into the Red and boil over after about 2 hours of bush hogging. I checked the radiator and it was clean. We assumed the thermostat that we put in was bad. So in the Fall of 2013 we put a new thermostat in. Now in 2014 when bush hogging with the tractor in will run on the edge of the white and black range. After aboyt 2 hours it moves up into the black. After about 2.5 hour it will start to approach the black and Red line at which time I will getwater boiling out the radiator over flow tube. I will let it set and idel for a few minutes and it will cool back down to the white black range and run for about 30 or 45 minutes before the temperture starts to climb again. The whole time the tractor is running and sounding good. The engine wuses a little oil but not bad. Was wondering if you had any sugestion as to what might be causing it too run hot or what to check. look forward to your input.

1800 engine pull

IP: 70.210.70.237 Posted on June 28, 2014 at 05:11:00 PM by sam

I am repowering a 1800 a with a 1800 c engine. What is the best way to pull the PTO shaft? I accessed the upper to PTO port, pulled the snap ring clip and do not know where to go from there. The engine is unbolted from the four mounting bolts and it is unbolted from the bell housing. All electrical and all coolant connections have been removed. Please let me know the trick to removing the PTO shaft.

Re(1): 1800 engine pull

IP: 172.242.134.43 Posted on June 30, 2014 at 08:00:34 AM by Larry Harsin

You have to get in there and pull that plug out and then an O ring. Then use your long 1/2" bolt and remove the shaft. Larry

I always thought it helped to engage the PTO clutch before pulling the shaft, makes reinstallation easier I thought.

About engaging the PTO clutch applies for a 1650, not and 1800. Larry

Generator power steering

IP: 50.75.116.202 Posted on June 26, 2014 at 09:41:59 AM by ed

Have just purchased a good working 1955 super 55 Oliver. Would like to put power steering on it. It has the standard generator only on it now. My question is I see a number of generator power steering units off the old Chevy Belairs of the same years that this tractor was from. Can I just get one of those and swap out the generators? I believe they are Remy number 102115. I can't find a comparison section for the Remy equipment but would like to know if they are comparable. And if so is this the right way to go about doing this? Any thought?

IP: 199.120.99.149 Posted on June 23, 2014 at 03:06:35 PM by Roger

The 1955 Turbo is leaking oil out of the exhaust side. Is a larger diameter return line helpful? If so where would I get a larger return line?

Re(1): 1955 Turbo Charger return oil line

IP: 172.242.134.43 Posted on June 24, 2014 at 07:33:41 AM by Larry Harsin

There is a restrictor that should be put in on the inlet side. If you don't have a restrictor, you should get one. This could solve your problem. You can get one from Central Fuel Injection. 712-362-4200. Larry

Add Tach S77

IP: 198.51.125.3 Posted on June 19, 2014 at 02:21:23 PM by Dean Freschly

I would like to add a tachometer to my Super 77 (1955 yr. w/ gas engine) to make sure I don't over/under speed PTO driven equipment. The operator's manual indicates that an engine speed of 1600 rpm should produe 540 rpm on the PTO. What are the posibilities to accomplish this? Would an automotive type driven from the ignition system work okay? Or do you think it would be possible to find all the parts to duplicate the original "mechanical cable-driven" type of tach? Would an I&T repair manual explain the steps to install an original style mechanically driven tach?

Hi Larry. What size bolt do I need to make a puller to get energy cells out of a 77 diesel motor?

Re(1): energy cell

IP: 172.242.134.43 Posted on June 20, 2014 at 06:42:35 AM by Larry Harsin

I think it is 3/4" fine thread. Larry

Re(2): energy cell

IP: 50.102.26.23 Posted on June 20, 2014 at 02:45:51 PM by Matt Glaser

We tried a 3/4" fine. It was to big and a 5/8" fine was to small. They wouldn't have used anything metric would they?

Re(3): energy cell

IP: 162.58.82.136 Posted on June 26, 2014 at 12:49:45 PM by Clay

I don't mean to jump in here when I'm not actually sure of what I'm talking about but I have an Oliver 77 manual and it calls for a 15/16 fine thread to make a puller for the energy cell. Based on what you and Larry are saying, I must be reading it incorrectly or it's smudged enough to make it look wrong. I just thought I'd pass this on.

Larry, I just installed a Pertronix ignitor and coil in my 1965 gas 770. I need to check the timing (I believe it's 25 degrees at 1925 RPM) again, but I am not sure if the #1 cylinder plug wire to hook the timing light to is the one closest to the radiator or the driver. Carb help

IP: 199.158.10.66 Posted on June 9, 2014 at 08:17:52 PM by Jeff

I've got a Super 88, but I think it has an 88 block and an 880 carb. The block is K-100-C. The carb is Zenith 12259. I've put in a new carb kit and it still doesn't run well. It needs to be run with the air screw all the way in and the choke half out. I think the next step is a new or reman carb, but I don't know which one. There seem to be multiple carbs for each model. By the way, the two numbers cast on the intake manifold are: 190741 and 101337A. Center to center bolt measurement is about 2 11/16. Hope this helps. Thanks for your help.

the 101337A is an 880 intake manifold. Your Zenith carb should work fine on that engine. Larry

Oliver 77 diesel engine removal

IP: 97.125.145.214 Posted on June 8, 2014 at 09:12:30 AM by Clay McNaughton

I'm finally getting to the point where I am going to remove the engine from an Oliver 77. This is for restoration purposes. My question is, what points on the engine can I safely hook my engine hoist to? I see some blogs stating that you can hook to the one center bolt on the head that protrudes out about 2 inches with a single lifting eye but this seems like a bit dicey considering the engine weighs around 900 lbs. The engine also has one more of these bolts in the front of the head but none toward the rear of the head. Can you let me know how to hook up to the engine in a safe manner? Thanks Larry!

Re(1): Oliver 77 diesel engine removal

IP: 172.242.134.43 Posted on June 10, 2014 at 07:33:58 AM by Larry Harsin

Yes. That one center bolt is the one to lift the engine with. It is called the lift bolt. Fabricate a lifting eye that screws onto that head bolt. Larry

Thanks Larry! I have a couple follow on questions. I talked to you about working on the injection pump and you told me to make sure the engine was at TDC. I believe I have that done, I found the timing mark on the flywheel and verified the #1 piston was at TDC by removing the energy cell plug and checking that it built compression up to about the time the mark centered on the pointer. I read the shop manual and have verified the pointer and mark on the injection pump to time the pump to the engine. Am I OK to remove the pump now to ship it to you? And also, since I am going to all this work, should I remove the injectors and have them checked. Thanks for all your help!!

Oliver 88 hydraulic problem

IP: 66.116.62.178 Posted on June 2, 2014 at 12:57:28 PM by Ted

We have been working on our old 88. We replaced the hydraulic pump(old one had a cracked centerplate). While we were at it we replaced the reservior(old electric hydraulic unit w/o levers) with a used one with selector levers/handles off of a S88(ebay). After we installed everything and bled the system, we checked pressure( gage says 1800psi). We thought we were good to go but when we hooked up to a cylinder on an inplement, the cylinder will extend but not retract. You can hear the relief valve squeek when raising the selector lever but no noise when lowering the selector lever. There seems to be a lot more travel in raising the selector lever and very little travel when lowering the lever. What did we do wrong? What should we check next? Thanks.

IP: 172.242.134.43 Posted on June 6, 2014 at 07:20:04 AM by Larry Harsin

First of all your pressure plate is high. It shouldn't exceed 1200 psi. Check your work. You must have put something together wrong. Larry

Re(2): Oliver 88 hydraulic problem

IP: 66.116.62.178 Posted on June 9, 2014 at 08:58:25 AM by Ted

You are correct, my son gave me the dickens. He wrote ~1300 on the paper and I read 1800(old eyes). So it is probably in the 1200 psi range. We are in the process of removing the reservoir and valve levers. We have another unit to put on if we can't figure out what is going on with this one. Re(3): Oliver 88 hydraulic problem

Re(4): Oliver 88 hydraulic problem

IP: 71.126.41.212 Posted on June 15, 2014 at 09:54:41 PM by Ted

Well - we found out the reservoir and selector valves were from another electric hydraulic system. There were wires in the reservoir that had been cut off under the two little covers. Apparently this had been powered up at one time. The selector valves seemed to be locked in one position by solenoids. We were unsuccessful in getting them to release by powering up with a battery. We replaced the unit with the other one we had. It has no wires anywhere and the selector valves have full range of motion. We should have checked the other unit out more carefully the first time. Sometimes Ebay is not your friend. Thanks for your help.
