1750 steering

While using my 1750 diesel today the steering went completely to the left. I can try to fight it back to center but once I release the wheel it goes immediately back to extreme left. This is both the steering wheel and wheels.

The trouble is probably in the hydra-motor. It could be as simple as a broken snap-ring which you could replace. There are no parts available anymore. So, if it is more than a broken snap ring, you may have to replace the hydra-motor. I would take it in to an AGCO dealer and have them "trouble shoot it". Larry
Battery Dying

I have a 1963 Oliver 770. When I start my tractor I have an "Amp" light on the dash. I can run the tractor for about 10 minutes and then it dies because the battery is not charging. What steps should I take to troubleshoot this problem?

Not that I know of. You'll have to remove the sway blocks to narrow it up that way. Larry
Oliver Clutch
IP: 65.182.246.38 Posted on May 25, 2014 at 10:33:07 PM by Ken
When my 1956 Oliver gave out, I bought a "newer" Oliver 50 HP Diesel (1960's?) that has run great for 10 years. This weekend I was out in the deep woods in Oregon when the clutch gave out. It is stuck in second gear so I cannot start the tractor. When I press down the clutch feels like it engages but I cannot move the gear shift. It is so deep in the heavily wooded area that I cannot tow it out. I need to start it somehow and drive it out. I am not a mechanic by any means. Is there any way to start this so I can drive it out and get it to a mechanic? The numbers on the plate are so worn that I cannot read all of them but I can read 74 612 87. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Ken

I am in need of a new pump for my 1855. It has the PVB-15 early pump. Seems to be a low pressure problem with the pump. Where should I get a replacement? Due to cost, I want to take the best route.

Contact either your AGCO Dealer or Pump Recom Inc in Independeace MO. 816-252-0791. I would check out AGCO first, and have a service man who knows what he is doing, do it. Larry

Yes. Parts are still available. It might be wear on the oil collector ring and the hub of the direct drive clutch. The unit will have to be torn down and inspected for worn parts that have to be replaced. Yo can get them from the AGCO Dealer. Or you can call Tom at O'Brien Co. Impl. 800-320-6224. Larry

I have my steering cylinder off my Oliver 1755, and need to take off the cap on the end. I cannot seem to get this done. About all I can think of doing is using the inside cylinder as a ram to get the cap off and that does not seem like the right thing to do. Any help is appreciated.

Remove the sector. Then, you can do what you are thinking, using the inside cylinder as a ram. Larry
Super 88 Hydraulics
IP: 207.177.30.39 Posted on May 17, 2014 at 07:30:29 PM by Zach
I had a cracked center plate and a valve bleeding by on the hydraulic unit of a super 88. I got what I thought was a good deal on a complete hydraulic unit. I changed out the entire unit and now I am having some interesting issues. When I first start the tractor one set of hydraulic lines built pressure until the relief valve blows off. There was pressure on both sides of the valve without actuating the valve. I thought there was a problem with that valve so I swapped it with the valve out of my original unit. Now with original valve I got pressure right away on one line and then back to the same thing as before. Do you have any ideas as to what is going on? Both valves don't do anything, I am just blowing by the relief right away when the tractor starts. Thanks for the help.

It may have a plug in the front passage for power beyond. On the left side, the very front port, could have a 3/8 plug inside the passage, It's about 3 inches in there. You'll have to remove the plug that blocks that passage. Larry

fuel/sensor
IP: 76.2.93.122 Posted on May 15, 2014 at 09:49:40 AM by Ben Steiger
Hello Larry, I was bushogging last night and I began to notice the rpm decreasing on my buddys 70s oliver as I went up hill and increasing as I went down. A while later the tractor died. I checked to see if fuel was making it to the injectors, it was. I checked the oil (not knowing if older tractors had a sensor or something) the oil was barely on the dip stick. I topped it off and turned it over but still nothing. There is no smoke or no reaction at all when I turn it over. Any ideas?

I'd check the fuel filters and make sure they aren't getting plugged. It sounds like the fuel isn't getting to the injection pump. I'd check the fuel and the filters. Larry

I have a 1973 1655 Diesel. The front wheels will wobble when going on the road at much above 7-8 MPH. Also when the tractor is shut off the steering wheel has about 1/4 turn free play in it.I also have a White 2-70 and there is no free play in the steering when the engine is off. Does the steering control unit need to be replaced? Thanks

Possibly but, you should make sure that the pitman shaft is not loose where it fits up into the power steering unit on the wide front. Jack the front of the tractor up and make sure there is nothing loose up there. Larry
Cylinder Head

Great Website. Maybe an Oliver man is the place to find a conncection. :) I have inherited a white 2-63 backhoe that sat for 5 years. The head has few cracks that I have sort of learned are normal. But I have visited a dozen machine shops who say they don't touch anything that old. Dang things have changed. Not even pressure testing it. So I figured I would just go get another one. Well this old tractor I am learning has just about everything available but a cylinder head. Do you have any parts tractors with a good cylinder head? My casting # on the cylinder head is 186402K. From some research I been told my motor is a waukesha 232 diesel and the numbers correspond to a 1555 Oliver. Any information on any heads you might have or where I might look? Re(1): Cylinder Head

I took the old wires off my 1951 Oliver because of excessive wear. I did not record the connections properly. I need to know where the two connections on the voltage regulator go. The third connection I know is the field connection. This is a 6 volt system. I have the connections between the coil and distributor. I do not have the key switch, the amp meter and the starter button to connections.

I don't know the advantages to positive ground. I just try to keep them the way they were built in the first place. It avoids confusion. As far as the Olivers are concerned, everything that has a generator is positive ground and everything that has an alternator is negative ground. Larry
1850 Oliver Steering

On my 1850 Oliver 2 wheel drive the steering wheel will go around several times thru the field, sometimes left , sometimes right. If you hit a ditch at a little bit of a angle it will spin the wheel. I replaced the big steering cylinder up front. What can I do to repair this problem. I live in Trenton, MO and would also take to a shop for repair.

The first thing I would do is make sure the blocking valve is not in the down position. The blocking valve is located just in front of the steering column. There is a little hole there so you can get a screwdriver in there. This is covered in your Operator's Manual. Larry

We just purchased an old 550 Oliver & are wondering if there is a way to add power steering. Also the hydraulics seem to be losing power - was wondering if you had any suggestions on either matter. We don't know the year but the gentleman that we bought it from had it for 33 years - can we tell the year from the serial number? Thanks so much for any help you can offer. Our Specification number is 45-0074 and our Serial number is 80 389-519 - any help on how to figure out the year? Thanks much.

You have to take the lid off of the top and there is a puller bolt that holds the shaft in the sector. Loosen the bolt and it will start to get tight again. Keep unscrewing the bolt and it will pop the sector and shaft apart. Larry

1755 Hydraulics

Hi Larry Thanks for all you do for us Oliver owners!! I have a 1755 that works great, after pulling a disk harrow or any implement at higher than 1200 rpm, all hydraulics stop working, and a loud screeching sound can be heard, in order to fix the problem, the rpms must be lowered to 800-900 then they are fine for maybe 15- 20 minutes. I have changed oil, filter and suction side hoses, but still have the problem. I'm thinking pressure relief valve is next?? Where is it located?? Thank You.
