serial # on 99

IP: 69.223.59.146 Posted on November 28, 2007 at 10:09:11 AM by Bill

There is a number stamped on side of engine block 3-18-48. Is this the date of manufacture and if it is the serial # states differently. Is their any where else to find a number to confirm the year of tractor.

Re(1): serial # on 99

IP: 4.158.84.165 Posted on November 29, 2007 at 05:40:36 AM by Larry Harsin

3-18-48 is the date the block was cast. The serial number tells you when your tractor was built. After those blocks were cast, they were allowed to sit and "cure" for a few months. Normally, this would put your tractor as being made later in 1948. But if not, perhaps the engine, in your tractor, has been changed at some time. Larry

Diesel Injector pump Super 55

IP: 66.92.210.146 Posted on November 26, 2007 at 08:22:48 PM by Larry Kruse

My 1955 Super 55 has lost power even with new pistons and sleeves and I have checked everything except the injector pump. The manuals say I have two options: 1. Remove just the rotary head and have it worked on. or 2. Remove the whole unit which requires removing the timing gear cover. Which process would you recommend? Can I inspect the governor without removing the whole unit? I am not looking forward to removing the front tin and radiator.

IP: 68.54.189.66 Posted on December 3, 2007 at 05:07:23 PM by Dick Witmer

The injection pump can be removed without removing the timing cover. There is a little cover at the pump gear and the pump gear can be loosened from there. Just put mine together and had to set the timing thru that little cover. HTH.

1850 hydraulic shift

IP: 74.33.206.254 Posted on November 26, 2007 at 06:03:45 PM by Herb

When I start in low it will shift into high. When I go back to low, it stops driving till I push the clutch in and let it up. It will start driving again. I don't think it should work that way. Any suggestions would be apreciated. Thank you.

IP: 4.158.84.196 Posted on November 26, 2007 at 09:31:07 PM by Larry Harsin

It sounds like the sprag clutch for the under drive is not engaging properly. The unit will have to be torn down and a new sprag clutch installed. Larry

Pre 70's diesel injector pump rebuilding

IP: 136.181.195.123 Posted on November 26, 2007 at 12:14:55 PM by Alan Wernette

We are restoring a 1954 Oliver 88 diesel and today we took the injector pump into a local shop to have it tested and replace the seals. The shop told us that there are no replacement seals made for these old pumps and if there were the biodiesel we use would eat up the seals if we use this fuel constantly. This is a shop that fixes truck injectors. So, is what he told us true? I find it hard to believe since I have been using biodiesel (20%)in my 1650 diesel for 5 years and it has only helped clean everything (fuel system) up and the tractor runs like a top! Plus, is there a rebuilt kit and/or seals sold for the American Bosch injector pumps used on the these pre-1970 diesel tractors? Thank you for your help.

Sealed Beam Lights

IP: 12.216.88.175 Posted on November 25, 2007 at 09:56:56 PM by Jim

I got a 1955 Super 55. It has the original 5 3/4 inch headlights with the sealed beam units in them. I need to replace the sealed beam units. Do you know of a source for these? Did any other tractor maker use the same Guide lights and might have the sealed beam unit? I found on GE's website a 4019 and a 4013 that might work but I dont know for sure. Seems like all the reproduction places just handle the repro. 5 3/4 lights that use bulb and reflectors. Thanks for your help!

IP: 4.158.84.31 Posted on November 26, 2007 at 06:13:42 AM by Larry Harsin

Those may be available from AGCO. Check with them first. If you are using 12 volts and your lens are o.k., you can get the small halogen bulbs at automotive stores and soder them into the existing sealed unit. Larry

1650 gas valve adjustment

how much gap is supposed to be between the vavles and rocker arms on a 1650 gas? We are putting the head back on and need to set them and I can't find my I & T book anywhere! thanks!

According to my Operator's manual, it says .013-.015 on intake valves and .023-.025 on exhaust. ( This is for a gas 1650 )

Oliver 1650

IP: 4.252.244.166 Posted on November 23, 2007 at 09:50:58 PM by T Kramolis

Hello, I have a 1650 Diesel and when I put it in the High range and let off the clutch it wants to die but when I put it in the low range it works fine. Is there something wrong with the shifting forks or is it a gear or something else causing this?

Re(1): Oliver 1650

IP: 4.158.84.239 Posted on November 25, 2007 at 05:02:56 PM by Larry Harsin

I suspect you have a problem on the cluster on the input shaft in the transmission. It sounds like the small gear may be seized onto the shaft. Larry

Re(2): Oliver 1650

IP: 4.252.246.205 Posted on November 27, 2007 at 10:54:46 PM by T. Kramolis

What do I have to do to fix it?

Re(3): Oliver 1650

IP: 4.158.84.165 Posted on November 29, 2007 at 05:45:37 AM by Larry Harsin

To fix it, you will have to tear it down. If, indeed, that is the problem, remove the shaft and cluster and repair the damaged parts. Remove the hydraulic system and possibly remove the engine or splitting the tractor. Larry

How to install float valve

IP: 69.66.131.181 Posted on November 21, 2007 at 09:04:05 AM by Ed Schulte

Larry, I need to install a float valve for a loader on a 770 oliver, not int in tyeing up a leaver, I need to know where to install a plug or plugs that I am hearing about. If you can please send me a diagram of how its done. Thanks, and have a good thanksgiving day. Ed

Re(1): How to install float valve

IP: 4.158.42.35 Posted on November 22, 2007 at 06:04:05 AM by Larry Harsin

There is a 1/2" pipe plug directly ahead of the front outlet on the left side of the unit. Remove that plug and you will find a 3/8" pipe thread passage in there a ways. Us a 3/8" socket head pipe plug to block it, then the oil will come out to go to the float valve. Then, your return oil, will have to go in on the right front of your unit, if it has a filter. Where it returns, will be a 3/8" pipe plug. Now, if the unit you are working with, does not have a filter, the oil coming out of your valve, will return to the drain, which is on the left side of the unit , to the rear. Larry

1850 injector pump

IP: 208.126.18.185 Posted on November 18, 2007 at 06:12:23 PM by Denis

I just had my injector pump rebuilt,it was leaking fuel.I installed it and bled air out of line but tractor will not start.Any ideas? It looks like the shaft will only fit on one way.and I lined up the timing mark.

Re(1): 1850 injector pump

IP: 4.158.84.125 Posted on November 19, 2007 at 05:50:56 AM by Larry Harsin

There is probably some air still in the system somewhere. There are 2 bleeders on that pump. Also, you may have to crack the high pressure lines and bleed them. Then, it should start. Larry

Super 55 Steering

IP: 63.250.245.247 Posted on November 17, 2007 at 11:57:36 AM by Robb

My 56 super 55 will not steer to the left. It steers to the right fine, but after the wheels are centered the steering wheel spins with no effort. It has manual steering. What should I look for to fix this?

Re(1): Super 55 Steering

IP: 4.158.84.53 Posted on November 17, 2007 at 10:32:36 PM by Larry Harsin

You will probably have to have the steering box reworked. If you don't have an AGCO Dealer to repair it, you should contact Tom at O'Brien Co Impl. 800-320-6224 or Valu-Bilt 888-828-3276. They both have an exchange on them. Larry

1650 hydra drive

IP: 68.221.136.119 Posted on November 14, 2007 at 11:43:54 AM by Jeff Oliver

We just bought a 1650 that won't pull itsself. The guy we got it from said it needed a clutch. However after cleaning it real good we noticed that the top of the hydra drive unit waqsa real black like it had gotten very hot at one time.

If this unit is messed up will that cause it to not pull in either high or low range or just not in low?

Re(1): 1650 hydra drive

IP: 4.158.84.110 Posted on November 14, 2007 at 10:20:02 PM by Larry Harsin

It could be either way or both ways. It could have a bad sprague clutch or a burned out main drive clutch in the hydra power. Larry

IP: 74.226.105.232 Posted on November 15, 2007 at 08:24:37 AM by Jeff Oliver

Ok thanks. We're going to check it all probably this weekend. Looks like one way or the other the motor has to come out...

If it is the Hydra drive what parts do I need to just leave it out and do you have them?

1655 heat gauge

IP: 159.182.1.4 Posted on November 12, 2007 at 04:19:15 AM by Mark

Larry, My 1655 was working fine, I parked it a few days and when I went to use it again the heat gauge shows hot. Even if I haven't run it but just turn the switch on. What do you think? It is a gas.

Re(1): 1655 heat gauge

IP: 4.158.84.76 Posted on November 12, 2007 at 06:14:53 AM by Larry Harsin

I would disconnect the wire from the sending unit, located by the thermostat. Then, if you turn the key on and it doesn't read hot, the sender unit is at fault. If it still reads hot when it is disconnected from the sender, the wire probably has a bare spot somewhere and is grounding, making it do that. Larry

Re(2): 1655 heat gauge

IP: 159.182.1.4 Posted on November 19, 2007 at 04:09:15 AM by Mark

Thanks Larry, I tried unhooking the wire and the gauge still goes to hot. I will replace the sender and hopefully that will do it!

FLUID

I WAS OUT OF TRANSMISSION FLUID (2 QUARTS) FOR MY 1650 INDUSTRIAL AND MIXED IN SOME HYDRAULIC OIL INTO MY HYDRO-DRIVE, WILL THIS BE OK TO USE??

Re(1): FLUID

IP: 4.158.84.76 Posted on November 12, 2007 at 06:10:36 AM by Larry Harsin

It isn't what it reccommended. I would get some automatic transmission fluid and change it. Larry

what is involved in changing one these tractors (1949 oliver 77) from 6 to 12 volt... thankyou for any advice on this matter..

IP: 65.121.139.193 Posted on November 8, 2007 at 04:13:10 PM by Brian Decatur co. Ia

Swap batteries. You will need to change the regulator for the generator to a 12v. Many times the 12v regulator is for neg ground. Many folks also swap in an alternator for reliability. You will need to use a 12v coil and ballast resistor. I have found that the 12v coil used on the "K" series Kohler engines works very well and has the ballast built in. The starter can be changed to 12v by rebuilders, but it's not really necessary. As long as you remember to not crank the engine more than 10 seconds at a time you will probably never have a problem. They also will start easier in cold weather too with 12v on a 6v starter.

Get a 12 volt generator and 12 volt voltage regulator. Install a resistor in the line that goes to the ignition coil. Get 12 volt light bulbs. Larry

white backhoe

IP: 66.76.254.55 Posted on November 7, 2007 at 11:12:24 AM by gary

Do you know what type of fluid to put in the transmission of a white backhoe model 2-63-15? The one connected to the engine that controls forward and reward movement and the trans behind it you shift gears through? Thanks Gary

Re(1): white backhoe

IP: 4.158.84.63 Posted on November 8, 2007 at 06:09:05 AM by Larry Harsin

The Reverso-Torque uses automatic transmission fluid. The transmission and final drive uses 80 - 90 transmission grease. Larry

1800A Trany Question

IP: 74.205.193.108 Posted on November 5, 2007 at 06:10:43 PM by Dave

I need you opinion on something I am seeing when I pulled the trany cover off my 1800A this weekend. The problem is it will occasionally pop out of gear. It usually happens just as the pressure on the gears changes, from pushing to holding back, such as backing off of a trailer or mowing road ditches. You can hold the gear shift lever with slight pressure against it and it will not happen, but you can feel there is a time when there is pressure on the gear shift lever.

Here is what I am questioning. The sliding collar on the input shaft for moving from low to high range shows wear. Do you remember how tightly it should fit to the shifter fork? When the trany is put into R1 which is were the problem occurs the most the collar has about a 1Zÿ42 to 1Zÿ22 of deflection when you move it back and forth opposite of the shifting fork while 3in gear2. It looks like in the service manual pictures the fit should be fairly tight and not that loose. I know on my 88 the fit was a lot tighter when I had that one apart. I am just trying to get a game plan on how to fix this or if I should just make do with it. I called an AGCO dealer today and the collar is a deleted item (which I expected). I really do not want to pull the motor and start into the trany to investigate any farther if that is the problem, since most used parts will probably have the same wear if run in the high range most of it1s working life.

IP: 4.254.117.181 Posted on November 5, 2007 at 09:45:26 PM by Larry Harsin

You may have a fork that is worn enough to let it act this way. You might be able to build up that fork, with weld. Larry

I have heard that a White backhoe model 2-63-15 has a chassis much like an Oliver model 1550 or 1555. Do you know if this is true? I am looking for a repair manual and a place to get parts for the White backhoe, do you have any idea who I could contact on information about the White? Thanks very much Gary

You are correct about the chassis being like the 1550 and 1555. You could check with the Floyd Co. Museum in Charles City to see if they have a Service Manual for the White you have. Email them: fchs@fiai.net Phone: 641-228-1099. Call Tom at O'Brien Co. Impl. He can help you with info and possibly parts for your White. 800-320-6224. Larry
