Tackometer not working

Posted by Scott Brady on October 27, 2017, 11:17 pm 50.36.75.140

Just got a Oliver 1600 I took the cable off the distributer where it .screws on to and put my drill on in reverse and the dial seems to work fine . I can feel something spinning around where it screws on to the distrubeter but it doesn't seem to want to spin the cable is there something in the hookup on the distrubeter that is broken?

White 2-70 oil pressure

Posted by Scott Sampson on October 27, 2017, 10:11 pm 174.230.143.183

I have a white 2-70 (family heirloom) that we recently had engine rebuilt for the second time. First rebuild the mechanic accidentally tore a piston ring when reinstalling and the engine needed overhauled a year later. Before the second rebuild while trying to determine the problem they figured it was a head gasket problem and poured gasket repair in the radiator to try and seal up the leak. Fast forward after changing the oil multiple times we finally had the engine torn down and found the real problem with the piston ring. After getting the tractor home from the second rebuild the oil pressure is only at 20 PSI . My father-in-law who is on the tractor since New swears that the tractor always ran at 40 psi. I have taking the gauge off blown the line with air and Tested the gauge which seems to be working fine with air pressure. The last time I started the tractor the gauge never lifted off of zero. could it be the oil pump is going bad or possibly the gauge? What should this tractor normally operate at for engine oil pressure?

Posted by Larry Harsin on October 28, 2017, 8:02 am, in reply to "White 2-70 oil pressure " 172.242.140.109

Is it a gas or a diesel. The diesel carries more oil pressure than the gas. If it is a diesel, it should carry 35 to 45 lbs. If it is a gas, 25 to 35 lbs. If it is a gas, there is a pressure regulator valve on the front of the engine, right side, below the alternator. Take a 13/16th wrench to unscrew it. You will find a spring and plunger in there and the plunger may be stuck back. Larry

hydraulic systems on fleetline tractors

Do you know of anyplace where one could take a fleetline or three digit oliver hydraulic system and have it completely rebuilt ? My son and I have seven at present. It is a coincidence, but my Dad purchased an Oliver 60 on January 20th, 1945. We just finished restoring it. Thanks CW

550 drawbar

Te bracket that holds the drawbar to the tractor. Rework it so that it will hold the pins. Or, you can get a different bracket. Call Kent Gordon in Palestine, TX. He may have a used one to sell. He has parted out a lot of 550's. 903-729-8349 Larry

770 oil pressure at start up

Posted by John Ostrowski on October 23, 2017, 4:35 am 174.255.192.149

I just rebuilt my 770 gas engine. I had one of the oliver Low normal colored gauges in the side of the block. When cranking over with the starter I could only get the gauge to flutter. Is it possible to get 10 lbs. pressure while cranking? Should I pull start? I used an oil preluber that made the gauge bounce a little. I am concerned about having enough oil pressure at startup. What is the best way to get it started?

1650 dumping hydraulic oil in rear end

Posted by Pat Walsh   on October 22, 2017, 8:04 am 207.32.55.182

Just got this tractor. Gentleman bought at a sale. Tractor had been sitting quite a while. Got rust problem fixed on fuel system. Was going to change all the fluids, checking rear end and emptied over a gallon of fluid just taking out check plug. Filled hydraulics to full, ran for a hour, which resulted in low hydraulic oil and high rear end fluid again. From what I've read I must have an issue with my hydraulic pump. I'm somewhat mechanical, can I change this myself and how exactly to I access the pump? Thank You

You'll have to remove the hydraulic system from the tractor to access the pump. However, when you remove the pan from the hydraulic system, check the pan and make sure it doesn't have a hole or holes. This could be the problem. Otherwise, it is the pump seal. Larry

1850 Diesel

Posted by John Gallant on October 12, 2017, 5:48 pm 142.68.117.9

Hi Larry, First want to say your expertise and information on here is priceless. I have a 1850 with loader that I use on a daily basis. I've had it 5 years now and its proven itself as a reliable, strong, very easy on fuel tractor. Going at road speed and applying left brake, I get a single dry solid clunk sound coming from brake/bull gear area. I get same clunk if pushing dirt with loader and putting rear wheels under load. Again, only clunks once and will not do it again unless I put tractor in reverse and back up, then forward again. Sometime on road, shifting the hydra power from low to high in 6th gear is enough torque to create the clunk. Sounds like a locked up brake that would release under pressure but its not locked up or dragging. Any ideas?? Also just starting last winter, when raising snowblower with 3PT, it would cause my chute to rotate with cylinder plumbed in to I believe right side remotes. not just a little bit but would extend cylinder half to 3 quarter stroke. Never did this in 5 years till last winter. I have an I&T service manual but haven't been able to pinpoint these issues yet. Thanks in advance

I would take that brake apart and clean it up. Make sure the actuator springs are good. If they are stretched, replace them. The hydraulic issue is a common complaint, sort of the nature of the beast.

Posted by John Gallant   on October 14, 2017, 2:08 pm, in reply to "Re: 1850 Diesel" 142.169.78.253

Thanks larry, I did take brakes all apart, cleaned and polished steel balls and pockets in actuator plates. Springs look good and tight. Going from reverse to forward to cause the clunk will happen even if I don't apply brakes. It only does this clunk when wheels are torqued like pushing dirt or letting clutch out a little quick

1964 770 power steering fluid

Posted by John Ostrowski   on October 11, 2017, 7:02 pm 104.8.53.111

What is the correct power steering fluid for my 1964 770? The manual says #10 motor oil or type A transmission fluid. Type A is no longer available and I don't know what the substitute would be. There are so many kinds of Dexron. I was thinking of using Valvoline power steering fluid. What do you think would be the way to go? I drained the reservore but old fluid is still in the front steering unit and the rear upper unit. It is not contaminated so I wasn't planning on draining it any further. Thanks for your input.

1967 Oliver 1650 Gas Burned Exhaust Valves

One thing is to make sure your exhaust is covered when your actor sits outside. My experience with the 1650's is that they seldom have valve problems. Proper ignition timing is very important. Larry

We looked in tractordata.com but were unable to find any model like that.

appreciate the help. It is a 6 cylinder gas, with flat top fenders with single lights in each. wide front end which is fwd of the front of the tractor. 15.5 x 38 tires. Air cleaner on left side and with small top. Muffler to the rear of the air cleaner. 2 range transmission with 6 fwd and 2 rev. Any help would be appreciated

The S/N is 157093, drop the last three digits as they designate the transmission and final drive ratios. My guess is that it is a 1965 1650 gas tractor. I would suggest you contact the Floyd County Museum, they can give you the details with the S/N you have. Link below. http//www.floydcountymuseum.org/

Year Starting Serial Number

1973 827183

Are there any numbers on the engine, or trans that could tell me for sure what model this one is? Thanks, Thom

Mine has a 24 volt starter, and the 1465 shows to have a 12 volt starter. I still would like to know if there are any numbers on the engine, trans, rear end that would verify that this is a 1465? I would be happy to send you a couple photos if you could tell from that. When I got the tractor years ago it came with one decal on the hood that said Oliver, and one on the headlight housing that has 1450. They both have a lot of the same features, but the differences have me wondering. Let me know if you would like a photo, or two. Thanks, Thom

Hydra Power on a 1965 Oliver 1850

Larry Hi:

I have a 1965 Oliver 150 Diesel tractor. It runs fine in direct drive but when you shift it into hydro drive it will continue to move for a few minuets then stop. You can then shift it into direct and it will move just fine. Is this the sprag Clutch going out? If so how hard is it to get parts to rebuild the whole hyrapower unit while you have it out. I also assume that you have to pull the engine to get the hyrdapower unit out. Is that correct. Thank You Ron Hardesty

Posted by Larry Harsin on October 2, 2017, 10:15 am, in reply to "Hydra Power on a 1965 Oliver 1850" 172.242.140.109

Yes. The engine and hydra power will have to be removed from the tractor to replace the sprag clutch which is not holding. Before doing this, I would drain the fluid from the hydra power and put in type A ATF. Dexron and Mercon are the 2 replacements for type A. Larry

I would suspect that it has a stuck exhaust valve. Remove the valve cover and see if this is the case. It may have a displaced push rod. If the valve is stuck open, try to get it closed and then put W-D 40 on the valve stem and tap it and try to get it freed up. Larry

Does a 1939 Oliver 70 have all six gears installed, or does it inky have the four gears installed? It is four now. Owner would like to have all six if they are there. Thanks Dale H

It depends on how the tractor was ordered. It could be either way. I would remove the power lift and look in the transmission and see what is wrong. Larry
