550 valve seal install?

IP: 166.181.3.68 Posted on September 28, 2016 at 06:01:26 PM by roger wallis

Hello Larry, Doing some work on my 1963 550 gas tractor. I am trying to slow the oil smoking a bit. I would like to install umbrella seals on at least the intake valves. Is this acceptable? Thank you.

I don't really like the use of the umbrellas on the valve stems. If the guides are worn, I would replace the valve guides and use the factory type seals instead of the umbrella seals. Larry

Maybe the governor is stuck or sticky linkage on the governor. Larry

1955 Oliver

IP: 184.21.143.147 Posted on September 26, 2016 at 07:35:41 AM by Richard Kemp

Hope you can help me. I would like to know how to remove the clutch, pressure plate & throwout bearing on a 1955 Super Oliver tractor w/o removing the motor. Have been told it can be done w/o removing motor, is this true? Would appreciate any help you can give.

The way to do it is: Remove the hood, fuel tank and battery. Then, unbolt the dash and fold it up over the engine. Remove the long PTO Drive shaft from the rear. If the tractor has a belt pulley assembly, remove that. And then you can access the cutch. Larry

ten qt. oil pan for a 88

IP: 71.117.162.250 Posted on September 24, 2016 at 08:24:30 AM by Tom Rowe-Drake

Hi Larry, I was helping a friend replace a cracked block on a 88 and we used a 5 1/2" deep oil pan instead of the 4 1/2" one and it took 9 quarts to bring it up to the full mark. Why can't I find a listing in any of the parts books for the deeper pan?

Re(1): ten qt. oil pan for a 88

IP: 184.21.143.147 Posted on September 30, 2016 at 03:21:07 PM by Larry Harsin

That deeper pan was never on the 88, so it isn't in the parts book. The pan you have could be off of a 1650. Larry

Do you know if there is a difference between the gas and diesel block? I have seen that the casting numbers are the same. Mine has the number185220 that is a diesel but the gas block has the same number is there any difference? Thanks Steve

No. They use the same engine block. Larry

Oliver 550 runs rough

IP: 209.173.180.49 Posted on September 21, 2016 at 08:41:44 PM by Dave Smith

Oliver 550 gas runs fine for 1 hour then it will run rough. I can pull the choke closed and it runs fine. I rebuilt the carburetor and preformed a valve job and replaced of the upper gaskets. I have not been able to find a vacuum leak. Any ideas?

IP: 184.21.143.147 Posted on September 22, 2016 at 08:27:43 AM by Larry Harsin

Maybe the outlet in the fuel tank is plugged so that it isn't getting enough fuel at times. Larry

Starting Issue

IP: 71.86.176.205 Posted on September 21, 2016 at 05:47:20 AM by Clayton

I have an Olive 550. I don't know much about electrical on vehicles or tractors. I've had the tractor for over a year now and had zero issues. Yesterday when I went to start it there was absolutely nothing when I turn the key. I charged the battery while in the tractor and still nothing. So I put a new battery out of my truck in the tractor. When I was hooking the battery up the terminals seemed to ark really bad. I got it hooked up and the tractor fired. Shut it down, put all the tools away. Came back less than 5 minutes later to use tractor and there was nothing again.

IP: 184.21.143.147 Posted on September 22, 2016 at 08:26:12 AM by Larry Harsin

It seems odd to me that you had arcing when you connected your battery. Did you connect the cables as they were before? On Olivers with alternators, it is always negative ground. Oliver with generators were built with positive ground. Larry

3pt and loader

IP: 192.171.210.125 Posted on September 20, 2016 at 11:38:44 AM by Lori

We bought a Oliver 1850 and when we use the 3pt to lift a bale it works fine. Except when you have the 3pt and loader on the tractor and want to use the 3pt to lift a bale the loader goes clear to the sky before the 3 pt lifts bale without using the loader controls?? If you go to use the loader and go to raise or lower the loader, the bucket will tilt back to a full tilt position. We have bled out all the air but it continues to do this and it doesn't have much strength. Is this a pump or valve problem?

Re(1): 3pt and loader

IP: 184.21.143.147 Posted on September 22, 2016 at 08:20:18 AM by Larry Harsin

It is the nature of your hydraulic system. The best way to overcome it is to install a loader valve. Larry

oliver 88 lp

im looking at a oliver 88 non super that has a horizonal lp tank that looks factory. everything I've read says that all non super lp tractors have vertical tanks. Did oliver dealers install lp kits at the dealerships

Re(1): oliver 88 lp

IP: 184.21.143.147 Posted on September 22, 2016 at 08:34:19 AM by Larry Harsin

On the early 88's, factory installed lp tanks were vertical. Several farmers wanted them later. There were many after market places that installed them horizontally. It could have been done by a mechanic or the gas company or somewhere else. After Markets were installed horizontally many times. Larry

Apparently you will have to replace or repair the hydraulic pump. Larry

1850

IP: 184.21.143.147 Posted on September 16, 2016 at 07:44:09 AM by Dan Finn

Love the tractor (the few leaks that it had have been dealt with) I am having another problem that I was wondering your advice on. In July, it threw the coupler chain, and I put it back on without trouble. Recently it partially released and we could get the cotter pins back in. Next day it came off while hauling a load of hay. WeÕve been having trouble getting it back on and I noticed that the engine side gear rides about an 1/8 inch higher then the tranny side. Should the engine be shimmed to match the gear heights? Should the chain be replaced out of course?

IP: 184.21.143.147 Posted on September 16, 2016 at 07:45:41 AM by Larry Harsin

I would use a jack bolt under the hydra power to get that lined up better. You will have to drill a hole in the main frame and use a 1/2 inch bolt. I would run the bolt up to a plate under the hydra power. Larry

88 Carb

IP: 74.36.91.231 Posted on September 16, 2016 at 05:56:32 AM by Kevin

Hi Larry, first want to say thank you for having your page. I've followed it for a while. I bought an 88 that had been sitting for 25+ years. I've replaced the plugs, wires, points. I just got the gas tank back from getting cleaned and coated. I replaced the carb (TSX 374) with a rebuilt one and am at a loss where to start with setting it.

Bucket Hydrolics

IP: 166.170.0.122 Posted on September 11, 2016 at 06:29:05 PM by Ron Darling

My uncle bought an Oliver 770 with a front end loader that has 46a on it. The bucket will move and articulate but lacks the power to lift anything. Ideas? I can work on motors but know nothing about hydrolics

Get a pressure gauge and check the pressure in the hose. You should have 1000 lbs 0f pressure. Larry

Oliver 550

IP: 70.195.140.94 Posted on September 8, 2016 at 11:50:34 AM by Chris Majewski

Love this website you have. My question is on my Oliver 550 (gas) with loader, when running my rpms are fine and everything sounds fine, but my tractor is acting "weak". It is barely driving in first gear and wheels barely spin. My clutch will go through all gears and reverse is stronger than forward. Is this a clutch issue or something else??

Re(1): Oliver 550

IP: 184.21.143.147 Posted on September 9, 2016 at 07:45:38 AM by Larry Harsin

It could be the clutch. It sounds like a faulty clutch. Larry

On a 1965 1850 what color should fender metal be behind the lights white or green. See a lot with white. The one I am redoing has green and I see no white as I sand them down. What color would they have been from the factory.

Thank you. also when checking the block for gas are the sleeves supposed to protrude out of block or should they be flush with block face?

They should protrude a little bit. Larry
